Carved Nickels

HoboNickelArt.com is a site that's dedicated to the art of carving reliefs onto the face of coins. "Hobo nickels are one of the great American folk art forms. Engraving designs into coins has been a part of American culture since the 1700s. Coin carving took on a new life as the Great Depression took its toll on America in the early 20th century. With so many Americans out of work, both fledgling and experienced artists embellished nickels in order to survive. These “hobo nickels” were often used to pay for food and lodging."
