Obligatory...

..because Shemp was much underrated, but Curley made the best noises.

or just any footage from Congress, Parliament -- any legislative body really.

When I was a kid, I liked Curly better, but now that I'm older and more mature, I appreciate the depth and complexity of Shemp's work.

Oh, but for my wife to drop a bombshell like this one day. But no, instead all I get are beleaguered harrumphs if I bring up even the slightest inkling that watching The Three Stooges Meet Hercules or the like would be enjoyable.

I know, they are first world nerd comedian problems but they're my first world nerd comedian problems.

It's basically "Ginger or Marianne?" for the sophisticated set.

I am a fully paid-up member of the unofficial Metafilter Shemp Howard Appreciation Society. I said it before and I will say it again: There is a subtlety and nuance to Shemp's brand of slapstick that I find lacking in the work of the other Stooges, and I say this with all sincerity.

I had a very cynical eye towards TV from an early age, and as a kid, figured that Shemp was the studio's attempt to pass off a cheap replacement for Curly, who left under what I assumed to be seedy circumstances because show business was full of terrible people.

It wasn't until the age of Wikipedia, when I hadn't watched a Stooges short in at least a decade, and one day my mind wandered to what was the deal with Shemp anyway that I found out the actual story, and it exploded my brain. Fuckin' Shemp, man. And for Moe to have to finish four films with various "fake Shemp" gimmicks after their brother's sudden death must have been sad as hell.

If that wasn't enough Shemp zen for you there's always the Shemp Meditation Tapes for Ultimate Enlightenment.

Was never a Shemp fan. In fact, as a kid, I tended to change the channel when a Shemp came on. He's just not Curly.

So in Shemp's Wikipedia page, it mentions that Barney Frank is a cousin of Shemp's wife? How cool is that?

OK, I'll buy the premise that Shemp was underrated, but I don't see how you can make an argument that he's better than Curly.

Just watch this clip of Curly in action, from "Disorder in the Court". Observe the delicate, daintiness of his movements. Marvel at the odd, frankly insane choices he makes as a performer (specifically the move he makes with his hat and cane at the :36 mark). Watch him run the gamut of facial expressions during his interactions with the exasperated judge and bailiff.

Shemp was the best of the Curly replacements, but there's a reason nobody ever wrote a song called "The Shemp Shuffle".
