I have no idea how these people got their cats to work their iphones, or why.

I have been trying to get ours to take selfies, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Those aren't real cats. All those shots display a complete lack of trout pout.

Simple yet highly effective concept. Cuteness ensues.

Is the next step "Cats taking selfies at funeral"?

Best of Internet, hands down. Er, paws down.

i suspect that this may be driven by something like Snapcat which basically replaces your phone screen with a drifting red dot that, if tapped, snaps a selfie.

And, like Snapchat, also carries the implied possibility that the subject of the photo is a little naked.

Malicious alert popup at this link for me (chrome on android)

I die of cute.

(I am not seeing any malicious alerts, but NoScript says there are no less than 16 scripts trying to run).

They need to adopt this style for shelter cats. Lots of "Come snuggle me!" photos.

It's true what they say, Tiggers ARE made out of rubber and springs. They're also fascinated by potatoes.

I'm kind of pissed off at the OED for picking "selfie" over "olinguito" (scroll down). I do, however, look forward to the olinguito selfies.

Wow. Either that potato just bit that kitten, or that kitten just ate a pound of meth. Or both.

One of those cats was also a Cat About to Sneeze. I think these are stunt cats.

"I think these are stunt cats."

That's the thing about all these YouTube cat videos and cat photo tumblrs and similar sites these days.

They do all the cinéma vérité stuff and, sure, they look like ordinary cats — they're not perfectly groomed and you can see that they're shedding — and we're presented with these weird and exciting narratives about real cats being cute and real cats falling off windowsills and real cats freaking out in an epic fight with a potato.

But it's all fake! These are all professional actorcats! Their cuteness and hijinks are all focus-grouped by media researchercats and scripted by screenwritercats and choreographed by stuntcats, with deliberately amateur-seeming photography (those aren't really smartphone photos) by photocats.

The hilarious cat and baby goat video? Both professionals. That goat has appeared in three national television commercials and twelve YouTube videos alone. The cat just switched agencies and filed a lawsuit against her former representation (MMC).

These supposed "selfies" were all produced in a studio; all of that feline insouciance was calculated professionalism (not that there's any feline insouciance that isn't calculated, to be sure).

It's all a product of the big cat media machine. And people lap it up, like it was, uh, something lappable. In a dish.

I would admit to being in the pocket of Big Cat, but cats do not have pockets. Or Instagram accounts, for that matter.

That's just what they want you to think, GenjiandProust.

Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I am in the pocket of a little cat, so anything I say about cats and pockets may be a talking point of Little Big Cat.

These reminded me of the "selfie" my daughter "took" when she was a baby. Selfie self-link, obvs.

I really enjoyed the cats!

Is that little black cat actually enjoying that dapper outfit? He doesn't seem to be plotting anyone's death at all.

OMG there's moar ...

Fancy, yes, but are they britches? They match the vest test best, I guess.

Yes. This is good.

Oh my, yes!
Their expressions reminded me of human selfies pages.

Except, you know--cuter.

Those last two, the close-up of the nose and the one following, had me wheezing and my dog looked at me funny, and how do I explain?
