This body of work consists of three simple materials that, when combined, produce the portraits: a wooden panel painted a solid white, thousands of small galvanized nails, and a single, unbroken, common sewing thread.

The artist also does neat things with shadows. Some other pictures of the work here

This post has a pretty nice detail shot that shows more of the technique.

Cool. Is this designed using an algorithm to convert pictures to this "format"? Or is the artist eyeing it?

Or is the artist eyeing it?

Either way, they clearly nailed it.

I would guess that the artist is eyeing it. It's like using a very fine pencil or pen and just scribbling to build up tone, similar to this.

Looks to me he's putting the nails in spaced closer together and further apart depending on the density of the thread winding.

Either way, they clearly nailed it.

Way to weave a pun into the thread. That's OK, hope you get your yardage outta the laugh.

Here's a YouTube video of a "That's-Amazing!"-type Japanese tv show episode about "visual magic" that features the artist and several of her interesting works using techniques like light and shadow to create images. The nails and thread technique is shown beginning at around 4:15, and you can even see her briefly working on a piece in this style.

She's gotta be eyeballing it- looking at the detail shot that taz linked, there are sooo many nails and threads. Trying to follow computer instruction would be insane.
