I have an idea to solve the energy crisis, but I suspect we've passed peak Merckx/Hinault.

This is great! What a great document. I love Hinault dismissing the criticism regarding his short legs by saying he's less bulky, hence more aerodynamic. I hope someone will redo this segment with a three seater, add Miguel Indurain and have them talk about heartbeats per second.

Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault. On a tandem.

Dropping EVERYBODY.

I remember the drama of an ageing Hinault and his teammate, an up-and-coming Greg LeMond, and the (cough, hem, not quite) passing of the torch in one of the greatest Tours ever. I thought we might get echoes of that battle with Wiggins and Froome.

Merckx, i find myself surprised he's an actual human as well as legend.

That battle isn't over. It hasn't even been fought yet.

I don't usually look at their stories, but there is a nice one about Merckx doing the 1974 Giro on the Rapha website this week.

thank you for posting this, it is absolutely charming. Props for the mariachi band clip, and seeing these two absolute legends of their time, discussing how Merckx is building the Badger a bike to contest Merckx's hour record on.

It is quite a perspective shift for me to see these 2 men so young and vital; it is a beautifully preserved archive film. Because they are from the generations of greats prior to the ones I am intimately familiar with they were both retired or fading by the time I was really interested in cycling. So I'm really only familiar with both of them as middle aged men, sort of tangentially at the fringes of the sport, handing out trophies at Le Tour, being interviewed about doping scandals or discussing frame building. This small window on their life as young men geeking out about bicycles and enjoying themselves on the beach is perfect.
