They're certainly cool looking. But, all that fondant and icing...my teeth ache just looking at them.

Yeah, I think they're more for looking at than for eating. But so cute!

O.K....so where are the "nailed it!" recreation attempts?

O.K....so where are the "nailed it!" recreation attempts?

That was my first thought as well. The photos make it look so easy, but I predict blobs and smears.

(fails to realize there were actual succulents on the table for comparison)

Next up, how to make imitation-cupcake pots for your succulents. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

imitation-cupcake pots for your succulents

Found one!

And here's some dirt cupcakes.

That sounds like a threat. "Keep your mouth shut or you'll be eating dirt cupcakes."

Cupcacti.

Jimmy Kimmel can get parents to prank their kids with these, using real cacti covered with icing.

So strange, I'm into cacti and succulents and find that most people hardly know what you even mean when you say "cacti and succulents". But for some reason this cupcake thing is burning a path across the web. I think it might just be the cupcake part?

I love these, but also feel like "mold a hunk of fondant" should never be a step in a recipe. I feel like a twinkie would make an ok base.

This would be a marvelous setup for a Mitchell & Webb "Get Me Hennimore!" sketch.

Something tells me professional cake-decorators get their giggles out of inventing impossible-for-the-amateur-cook-to-recreate concepts like this and posting them about the internet with these cheery, breezy "step one...step two" type instructions just so they can laugh at the catastrophic failures produced by the poor saps who get taken in by it.

Ikea do white 'lacy' plantpot holders which remind me of cupcake papers.

My aloe plant, which I thought was dead (though the cuttings are thriving) appears to now be about to grow a flower stalk. Wonder if they're edible?

I got to "fondant" in the ingredients list and closed the tab

Seriously has no one ever tried to "eat" fondant? Or heard of marzipan? I blame the cake shows on tv.

Except in a botanical context, "succulent" is a word used almost exclusively by people trying to sell you something.

When I lived in Philly, I used to go to the Philadelphia Flower Show every year and buy lots of odd, fantastic succulents. So yeah, succulents sell!

Like a lot of food on the web, more for looking than for eating. Maybe we need to start calling stuff like this "edible decorations" instead of "food".

The idea of using a twinkie as a base instead of fondant is genius as is using marzipan instead of fondant! Sadly, I have no reason to make cupcakes, let alone ones that look like dessert plants!

dessert plants!

One of us just had a laugh at the other's expense.

I have no reason to make cupcakes

Not quite "never used baby shoes", but still a pretty sad single-short-sentence story.

Fondant is the two-by-four of the cake decoration world; boringly common, reliably useful for structure, and sometimes breaks teeth.
