It's like being raped by your brother, and your father deciding the case

The Army's top sexual assault prosecutor has just been suspended after allegations of a sexual assault committed against a fellow sexual assault prosecutor while actually present at a sexual assault legal conference. At the same time, a bipartisan-sponsored bill from Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) to take the handling of sexual assaults out of the military chain of command failed in the Senate, largely along gender lines, leaving major veterans groups like IAVA disappointed and women veterans groups like the Servicewomen's Action Network furious. (Trigger warnings, obviously, abound.)

I am extremely proud of the work our Senator Gillibrand has done on this. This was her Facebook post reaction: I'm extremely disappointed we were unable to overcome a filibuster of the Military Justice Improvement Act today to create a military justice system worthy of the sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform. Thanks to all the sexual assault survivors who walked the halls of congress to make their voices heard in support of this legislation. And thanks to everyone who made calls and contacted your Senators. Your voices made such a difference in this debate. Without all of you, we never would have won the support of a majority of the U.S. Senate. As painful as today’s vote is, our struggle on behalf of the brave men and women who serve in our military will go on. We owe so much to those who bravely serve our country, and I will never give up fighting for them.
