Ilo Ilo: Singapore film done good, now playing Stateside

The first Singapore film to win at Cannes is now playing at various theatres in the US. Mostly New York, it appears, but I'm still so excited about this! For a late twenty-something Singaporean like myself, this film so mirrors my childhood. All of the angst filtered through the lens of a middle class ethnic Chinese Singaporean family just like my own, alongside the various threads of 'domestic help' and their relationship to the 'family nucleus'. Also, the portrayal of a family in crisis during the 1997 Asian financial crisis is especially poignant. Watch it if you can.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, cool news and I'm glad you're excited, but posts to the front page of Metafilter need to not be written in a personal blog sort of tone; more "here's something interesting" and less "here's what I think about this". -- cortex
