I blame Apple and Microsoft for abstracting away (but not eliminating the need to know about) this crucial part of modern computing.
The "preferred" process for launching an app in OS X seems to be "Hope the app is in the dock, and hope that 'advanced' users might try looking in Launchpad if they can't find it in the dock...."
THIS, above all else, is what drives me nuts about supporting computing users today (and that includes many users who really should know better.
Of course, Apple's insane iCloud metaphor doesn't help things very much (I'm a developer, and I can't come up with a good one-sentence summary of what iCloud is, that doesn't simplify things to the point of being borderline-incorrect).
