Dolly Parton: yet *more* awesome

Jolene by Dolly Parton - 45rpm single spun at 33rpm reveals a depth of emotion and intensity hitherto unexplored/unexpressed (which is saying something, given the original song.).

Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' Still Haunts Singers

Jolene, Dolly. At pitch 45/33
(not quite as weird as Jammy's posted version.)

I listened to this I thought, on the one hand, "what do you expect? It's Dolly freakin' Parton!" and on the other, "damn but if I didn't underestimate her again…"

That sped-up version of "I'm On Fire" is just eerie. Now I want them to do "State Trooper".

One the one hand, a song about stealing partners, dependencies, abnegation of self-image, all the sort of stuff that denies agency and makes sexuality a caustic power-play. Which a chap does not like.

On the other hand, god-darn it if this isn't how it is, some of the time. And, brothers and sisters, when people ask me if I like country, I say I like good country. And they look at me as if I say I like uranium beer, but only the healthy sort. But there is some good country, and this is that, and I speak as a man allergic to sentimentality and all that stuff up in the first sentence.

Stolen from my own Twitter feed from a few weeks ago:

Dolly Parton supposedly wrote "Jolene" within a few days of "I Will Always Love You"; what have you done this week?

I watched this a few days ago and the suggested videos on the side led me to this version of Miley Cyrus singing Jolene. Miley's version actually made me stop and go "oh - she's actually a pretty good singer." My only exposure to Miley had been her pop songs and dancing/tongue waving antics, I never knew she actually had the ability to really sing. So there's that.

On topic: I friggin' love Dolly Parton. I've never been to Dollywood, but it's on my list of places I need to visit.
