Poachers are stealing pieces of burls, bark and even wood from living and fallen redwood trees in California. Most thefts happen at night, and the Park Service is closing the Newton B. Drury Parkway to drives during night in an attempt at prevention.
(The writer of the CNN piece may want to rephrase the bit about how beautiful and unique the pieces made from wood torn from a living tree may be, even though he tries to condemn the damage immediately in the next sentence. In the meantime, the picture is heartbreaking.)
