There's a dual video out there somewhere, isn't there? One with people saying "Meow"? Someone please post the link.

Gary Larson was there first (sort of).
But I still laughed at the whispered one at 0:14.

Now part of me secretly hopes that that is what otters are singing to themselves as they propel themselves merrily along.

My dear departed Tabby Lee made a noise that sounded suspiciously like "Hey!" once. I tried to get her to repeat it, but she gave me such withering looks that I was sure if she ever spoke again, her next words would be, "I did NOT say 'Hey,' to you. You KNOW cats can't talk, you MORON."

Well, "hey" IS for horses, or so I've heard.

If anyone can ever find me the Kitty is a Bad Mystic video, I'd donate money to their favorite charity, even if their favorite charity is them. I say, "Come on, mouse," at least three times a week while in traffic.

Cat says NOOOO.

My cat says MII? MII? MII? until you feed him/ pet him/kick him out of the bedroom because OMG SHUT UP CAT. Then he flails at the door and says MAAAAOOOOW and that's usually when he gets exiled to the garage because it's 5 fucking am.
posted by emjaybee at 4:57 PM on June 13, 2014

Oh, the indignation in that cat's face, matched perfectly by the tone of the "Hey"s. How often I was on the receiving end of that from my late Kitty (also a tabby).

So this is suggesting that cats aren't saying "Hey"?

I have read that cats do not meow to other cats; hiss, growl, spit, sure, but no meows. They do that only to us. We are not really responding in kind, so all they are saying is "Hey!" So before we get too proud of teaching a gorilla a few hundred signs, let us remember just who took the first steps in interspecies communication.

I showed this to my six year old. Eight times in a row. We have not heard the end of it. All through dinner, "Hey. Hey. [whispered] Hey. What the [shouted] hey!" He's asleep now, but I know what Saturday's going to sound like, and it's identical to the past few hours.

Our cat speaks fluent cattish, and this has been sufficient for getting us to open cans of purported cat food. If he ever said 'hey' to me or my wife I'd likely take off on a rendezvous with the nearest tree.

Then I'd probably end up as cat food myself. Not the worst way to end up, really.

According to Gilbert Shelton's comic strip Fat Freddy's Cat, cats can talk. They say stuff like, "Meeee OUT! Proooowl NOW!"

One of my cats does not meow. She can only "woo..."--Alexandra Kitty

I had a cat that didn't meow. She made little noises, but never a meow. She also liked water and even occasionally taking a walk on a leash, as long as there were no noisy neighborhood barking dogs.

Maybe she didn't realize she was a cat.

miss her

I LOVE talking cat videos.

I wonder what would happen if I went back in time to Jefferson or Washington, say July 4th 1798, and told them about all the horrors and wonders of the modern world, with out exaggeration. Tell it just as it is. The state of the world today.
Then to back it up, I'd add one small lie. I'd convince them that animals in the future talk. I'd show them videos. And They are demanding rights under their "Bill of Rights"....because by 2014, the word "Man" is a legal term that applies to any living creature with speech abilities. Cats are men. Dogs are men. All mammals are men. Birds are even men.
But lizards are still lizards. Reptiles are not men. They are the devil.
Think they'd still want to overthrow the king?

I'm guessing they'd just kill me. Then maybe themselves.

My Veronica does not think she is a cat as she hates all cats but loves people and we refer to her as a person person (she does not act like a cat as she listens and comes when you call her and also will stop being naughty when you ask her to...)

But yeah, losing a cat can be devastating because they are such a big part of everything you do even if they are in denial about being a cat...
