As much as I love the taste of Ben & Jerry's this has got to stop. I'm sure this new flavor tastes terrific, but B&J have got to quit naming flavors after such lame bands. As an alternative, I suggest Kiss Krunch: Rasberry Whirl Ice Cream with little chocolate tongues. Fire away with yours...

The DMB backlash is nasty these days, isn't it? I don't know, jonmc. I'm not the biggest fan in the world, but Dave Matthews seems to fit right in with the Dead/Phish thing that B&J has lived off for years. In fact, of the three, I like Matthews best.

I guess I see how he gets on people's nerves, though.

Wait, is the point of this exercise to name lame bands? KISS gets my vote, too.

barkingmoose & jpoulous - It's not about dissing the bands. I just figured a bunch of clever people like us could come up with some good rock-related flavor ideas for a laugh. See, my man Miguel's got the idea. I suppose I'll reword it this way:

"Ben & Jerry's needs to broaden their musical horizons flavor-wise. Any ideas?"

I kinda just thought my Kiss Krunch was pretty nifty, as well.

That's just your opinion. As far as I'm concerned the honor of their own ice cream flavor is well deserved, being that Dave Matthews Band is one of the best bands to ever come onto the rock scene. If you're judging them based on their last crappy pop release, it's hard to say we're even talking about the same band. Their past stuff is amazing, and the upcoming album is even going to feature a few of the awesome songs that were on the unreleased but internet-circulated Lillywhite Sessions album. Also, if you haven't been to a dmb concert it's hard for you to pass judgement on them being that they are, first and foremost, a live band. At a show, they even make those new songs sound halfway decent.

I found out about this a week or so ago, I'm still working on finding a 7-11 in NY that's got the flavor in stock.

Um, you realize that DMB was honored because of their environmental work as much as (if not more than) for their music??? You did READ the article right??

For the last time, I didn't want this to turn into an argument about the DMB. Let's just have some fun here, hah?
posted by jonmc at 4:51 PM on January 19, 2002

Fair enough. Just keep in mind that when you bring up DMB in front of me, you're talking to a person who's dropping a few hundred bucks on thier upcoming spring tour, road-tripping to various venues and planning to do it all over again for the summer session. I believe I drove a total of 450 miles last summer to assorted shows.

i.e. Davehead.

Miguel, I know, I know. But I figured this one would be pretty innocuous, not to mention fun. I thought we'd be overrun with Nine Inch Chocolate Nails or even Devo Delight in a flowerpot-shaped container. Instead, I'm gonna be overrun by a tie-dyed lynch mob. I don't think I've ever seen a quicker derailment. I'm just a luckless SOB on here lately. I'm just gonna get it over with and declare myself MeFi's official whipping boy, OK?

I'm sorry, but I couldn't let this go by:

Dave Matthews Band is one of the best bands to ever come onto the rock scene.

(clutching skull) Uh...yeah. Dave's singing-out-the-side-of-his-mouth delivery was old after a few songs, yet that's the only vocal inflection he seems to have. His arrangements don't rise to the level of boring, and his melodies make Hootie sound like Cole Porter. Next?

How about Almond Brothers: vanilla ice cream with a chocolate swirl, almond crunch and a slight hint of Jack Daniels.

There's more than one man in the band. It's their uncanny ability to play together, improvise and jam that makes them what they are. Dave is the showman and the songwriter, working together with four men who can do amazing things with their instruments.
posted by tomorama at 5:18 PM on January 19, 2002

addendum: I realize there's no accounting for taste (hey, that has a double meaning in this thread!) but I wokr in an office where classic rock radio is played a lot. I can deal with most of it, in fact I like a lot of it, but DMB would need a lot more practice to suck. And while I'm venting, what the hell is up with Ryan Adams? Didn't he used to be called John Cougar Mellencamp 20 years ago?

apologies, johnmc.

That DMB can be considered adept at their instruments goes to show just how far standards have fallen. I'm not that much of a Phish fan, though I have seen them in concert, at least those guys understand thematic development. For Dave Mathews, improvisation is something actors do.

I like this one, it's a keeper.

Veruca Salty Chocolate Balls... Chocolate ice cream balls lightly sprinkled with salt.

LL Cool-Mint Chip... Fairly simple to figure out.

bizarre sidenote - Ben & Jerry's is NOT, I repeat NOT the first ice cream/rock and roll collision. Apparently back in the 60's a buncha bands did radio spots for some outfit called Great Shakes. I discovered them on WinMX, some guy has a ton of 'em. I managed to snag spots by Dusty Springfield and another by the Blues Magoos. If anyone wants a copy or knows where I can find more, send an e-mail.

I'm in tears, ROFLMAO.

"They Might Be Jamoca". Brilliant. And then I read "Godspeed You Black Licorice". OMG. Help. I can't breathe. (And B&J execs take note -- "Almond Bros." is totally marketable.)

Let's see.....

Dic-Tatertots. (It's nasty, but you somehow like it anyway.)
Screeching Walnut
Slipnut!
Emerson, Lake, & Praline
Paul Butterfat Blues Band
Emperoreo

I give up. I've sat here for five minutes trying out variations on "Deicide", but to no avail.

(This exercise in ice cream names reminds me of a bumper sticker I'd like to make someday: "What Would Husker Du?")

Thanks for the best laugh yet this year!

Chumbawumba Anarchy Nougat--10 or so great flavors in one great ice cream, years in its evolution and a failure in mass production.
