Excellent.

In case of not-hate: Run to the Hills. Also excellent.

This is kind of better than the original but it wouldn't be if the original didn't exist.

This is my favourite version of The Trooper.

Whichever version you're listening to, make sure you have the proper beer in hand.

There is nobody distributing Trooper Ale within 150 miles of me. I've looked. I've called the distributor and asked.

This is amazing, thanks for linking! That lovely mandolin part actually makes me think of Greek folk music more than anything.

COD, it might be a bit of a drive for you, but I found some Trooper Ale just last weekend at Jungle Jim's International Market in Fairfield, OH (10 miles north of Cincinnati). If you have any friends/family in SW Ohio, it might be worth sending them on a quest...

i would like that better if it wasn't a video, and i didn't have to look at those guys outfits for the duration of the song.

Cute. White guys in headdresses = still not cool though.

Yeah, as an actual hillbilly I always find bands doing the cartoon hillbilly thing a bit irksome.
Also White guy headdress, Not so good.

Oh huh, they're Finnish. Yeah they probably don't quite get the implications of the outfits.

Based on the accent, I'm guessing they're Scandinavian. The headdress thing is probably born of ignorance but still bad, of course.

Neko Case does "The Number of the Beast." complete audio video starting 25 or so seconds in

It was fun...until the vocals kicked in. I thought the song sorely lacked the aggression that Bruce Dickinson brought.

I was thinking the only thing it needed was more nasaly vocals. Or whatever the right word is for oldtimey Bill Monroe style vocals.

"The Trooper", isn't that the song they stole from Papa Roach? /runsaway

I give the costumes a pass because they're from Finland. And they play a mean cover.

The fact that wearing a headdress is not politically correct hasn't arrived in Europe yet. This is the first time I hear of it.

Also I see that headdresses are still being sold in the USA, so how widespread is this judgement?
posted by Berend at 12:41 PM on June 21, 2014

Widespread enough that doing it in the US would be socially unwise unless you want to only hang out with vapid pinheads.

Holy cow, that Neko Case cover was awesome, notably because she can *sing* like a fire hose.

It's cool to wear a headdress. I have a good friend who spends many weekends wearing on.

Of course, he's a Native American who performs in pow-wows and other rituals nationwide. White people should.... maybe not play dress-up as people who suffered genocide at their hands.

You haven't heard The Trooper until you've heard the original hand-fart version.

Pogo_Fuzzybutt: "White people should.... maybe not play dress-up as people who suffered genocide at their hands."

While I agree that folks shouldn't be playing dress-up in the religious garb of other people, phrasing it in terms of who performed genocide on whom isn't really productive, because 1) the Finns didn't really perform genocide, and, even if you say "yes, but they're white, so it still applies", then 2) it means it's totally cool for Asians and blacks and aborigines and and and to wear Native American headdresses, which I doubt is the actual desired conclusion.

dng, the Dokaka cover you link to is pretty awesome. Clever, masterly, and irreverent.

Does anyone know if that's a proper language those lyrics are sung in or if it's a beat-boxed heavy metal scat?
