I am a good dog

A short, bittersweet comic about a good dog and his brother, slightly less good because he jumps on things.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sorry for the late delete, but it looks like this is turning out to be a problem with the kind of awful "gotcha" aspect that isn't revealed in the post. If you want to repost later, it should probably be fairly clear either what the comic is about, or that it might be upsetting. -- taz

By the second page I knew where this was going and I was very sad I was right.

I saw this a while ago and it was really upsetting to me. I knew what it was and yet I reread it and now I'm upset all over again.

Can someone spell it out for me?

It's a reference to a plot in the comics series Watchmen.

I remember when this was first around on 4chan.

This didn't make sense to me at first because I didn't realize that the narration switched to the present with "there is a man behind the fence".

Spelling it out: This is an alternate perspective on some events in the comic Watchmen. The dogs' owner is a serial killer, and he is feeding his victims to the dogs. The dogs, being dogs, don't understand about this. Eventually, a vigilante/superhero called Rorschach turns up and ends the serial killer. He then discovers the dogs, which is where this comic ends. In Watchmen, Rorschach also kills the dogs (who he sees feeding on human remains). As a consequence of these events, Rorschach's law-and-order beliefs become much more radical and he arguably becomes mentally disturbed.

My world, in which the man behind the fence is from a rescue centre and the dogs are promptly re-homed together, welcomes visitors.

There are few things more disappointing than clicking on "a short, bittersweet comic about dogs" and getting something that turns out to be some kind of creepy in-joke for people who have read "Watchmen".

Not the best of the web.

Not sure how you can call this an in-joke. This story offered a different perspective on an event from the point of view of a pair of dogs who, in the original comic, appeared for a frame or two and were then slaughtered. A perspective which probably most Watchmen readers, myself included, hadn't even considered.

The author may have originally considered this an act of trolling but he created something much more interesting than his initial intent, and something which will stick with me for a while and will probably lead me to confuse my dogs with random acts of hugging.

However, if you haven't read "Watchmen" and got all into caring about these dogs and now you hear that "oh this is from a comic you haven't read and spoiler alert, the dogs die" it's pretty brutal.

Now I come to think of it, Watchmen isn't kind to pets, is it? Bubastis gets disintegrated for no reason. Somebody probably loved the space squid, come to that.

I think you don't know what bittersweet means. I didn't get the comic but now reading the backstory, sorry, this is just horrible. Going now to bleach my brain...

I wasn't familiar with the Watchmen plot but now that I know it, I am imagining a fluffy ending for this comic. I'm a fan of reapersun's work but hadn't seen this, so thanks martin (you always make such excellent FPPs!)

This is true.

If the mods pop in, I'd request "Watchmen", and perhaps "Rorschach", be added to the tags in order to make the connection relatively clear.

Where is the alternate alternate ending in which Rorschach and the dogs fly away and live happily ever after?
