The post The Secret History Behind Today’s Algeria-Germany #WorldCup Match being timely and tweeted is what brought it to my attention. But what to share? There is so much good stuff, that the rabbit hole beckons...

Too easy to lose the ball in the box going in straight at the defence, looking or waiting for people in onside positions to be available for passes, trying to lure defenders out of position.

On the US, Yedlin is stepping up. Jones isn't playing as well as he has been. Bradley is annoying, but not nearly has bad as he has been. Dempsey is a non-factor.

Stat of the match: 0 players offside.

Surprisingly, Possession is 53%-47% to the USA. Unsurprisingly, 10 fouls by Belgium, twice the US total. But the real story is 9 shots for Belgium, 2 for the US.

The big chance was that incredible set piece off the dead-center free kick right at the end of regulation. If that goes in, and it probably should have, the Belgians never get the chance at extra time.

Obviously the Belgians outplayed the US for like 100 of those 120 minutes so the "better" team ended up winning but the US sure had a very, very good chance of ending it before extra time on that one play.

@Strange Chain:

That's a complex question. The US already has a massive feeder program (the millions of kids who play soccer in the country, male and female). What we don't have is the same kind of intensive junior programs they have in other countries where you play for years as a youth in a system where you're intensively coached not just in sport but also nutrition and discipline and so on (are you familiar with the Canadian Juniors for hockey?).

Personally, I don't think this system can work in the US, so we have to make our own path. Right now our system isn't working as well as it could. Recruitment works short term, but when contracts end...bap, the players do as they please (aka go to Europe). This happens in Latin America as well, but that's another story.

Pretty much what they've been doing. DeAndre Yedlin is, if I recall correctly, the first fully homegrown player to make a USMNT appearance while playing in MLS without having played elsewhere; if he's not the first, he's certainly one of a very few. Julian Green obviously has shown tremendous potential in just a few minutes of play. There are a number of exciting youngsters coming through the ranks: Diego Fagundez at New England Revolution springs to mind, although he could declare for either the US or Uruguay; Jack McInerney at Philadelphia Union is having a breakout season.

Where we really struggle is in midfield, with ball retention and chance creation. Obviously the US can defend like no one's business, and there are decent finishers in the team, but we just give the ball away too much. I think that's the next big challenge, to develop complete midfielders who can effect transitions and make key passes. Only having one of a player like Michael Bradley, who has never been world-class to begin with, puts far too much pressure on the defense at this level when that one player doesn't perform. This was his best game, but Belgium still easily overran the American midfield. So I think that's the next big step.

Belgium is a nation of 11 million people and they just took us to the cleaners. But they have a beautiful system set up to cultivate great football talent.

"In practice, G-A-G means standardization. All over Belgium these days, boys and girls grow up playing soccer the same way. Every school, youth academy, and village team plays the same formation — 4-3-3, with classic, dribbling wingers — and follows the same progression up to the 11-on-a-side game. Kids under the age of 7 play 2-on-2; under-9s play 5-on-5; under-11s play 8-on-8. They never use more than half the field. It is only when they’re 12 years old that boys and girls are finally introduced to a full-size pitch and the idea of a long pass."

The US is a mid level team. Not horrible, entertaining to watch, but certainly not tier one. And, hate to say it, but I don't think we're making that jump any time soon. I think a lot of soccer appeal around the world cup is sort of the same as what happens during the Olympics. Really really fun, but :/ not sustainable in regular league play. I'm not really a spectator sports (rugby and hockey plz) person but I like the World cup, but watching a season game sounds very uninteresting to me.

It is only when they’re 12 years old that boys and girls are finally introduced to a full-size pitch and the idea of a long pass."

That sounds like something that can't be repeated in the U.S. Uniformity of that sort is not our strength.

And, hate to say it, but I don't think we're making that jump any time soon.

I think it'll be sooner than you think. Our first truly homegrown player -- never ever played overseas -- played this cup, and DeAndre Yedlin made a huge impact. I have a funny feeling his time with the Sounders is over as the Euro Leagues watched him play.

And you know what? A whole bunch of kids watched Tim Howard and Julian Green today -- and they want to be like them.

And next year? It's the Women's Turn. Abby's Last Stand.

In the commentary here (Germany) they were saying how the American team only trains four days a week, as opposed to the Belgian team.

If you look at the basic ball-handling skills of many of the other players, and especially the 'star' players, there's a lot to be worked on. Added to the number of dropped passes (another point the German announcer commented on) and there are some fundamentals that need to be improved. (The player who should be the exemplar is DeMarcus Beasley).

If the Yanks had played the first half like they played the extra-time, then we/they might have gotten somewhere.

This game hung on Tim the goalie, Jones, Beasley, Yedlin; with appearances by some of the other players. Cameron was, I suspect, secretly playing for Belgium. Or to a 6-foot tall invisible rabbit.

With all that said, Klinsmann is a great coach and hopefully USA has started to recognize how football/soccer can be fantastic.

Ah Man, stupid lousy getting up early for work meant I fell asleep on the sofa, and woke up as the MOTD music played at the end of the program, so I missed all the drama.

I notice he bought on Lukaku though, and he scored the winner! Well played to both teams - the first 90 mins was just about the best game so far, it really was end to end, and when Belgium stepped it up a gear in the second half, it was amazing to watch, and you just felt the USA were hanging on and could only win it by nicking one - and then suddenly Wondo was clear and it was heart in mouth time - but he skied it.

It really was one of those games where the best team won, but the losing team go out with their heads held high and their dignity and integrity at max - they gave it their all and it was a clean game, there was no dirty stuff really.

Via BBC:

Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen tweets: "Hard work pays off!! Credit to the USA as well for this amazing game!"

Belgium captain Vincent Kompany tweeted after the match: "Two words.. TIM HOWARD #Respect #BelUSA"

Midfielder Michael Bradley: "I know this is an experience I'll look back on when I finish playing and smile," he said. "Right now, the disappointment of not getting to a quarter-final is big."

Former Fulham forward Clint Dempsey: "There is a stat about the average age watching the World Cup being 38. That shows that people who have played the game, have grown with the game, are passing it down to their kids. That is going to help us, it is great to see that the game is on the rise."

Midfielder Jermaine Jones: "We've showed the world that the USA is growing, and everybody who plays against us from now on in, knows we're for real."

Respect to both teams, their coaching staff and managers for that.

So where we doing the quarter finals, and who is still up for this? Did anyone contact team mod regarding this?

QF Line Up:

France v Germany (Friday 4 July, 17:00 BST)

Brazil v Colombia (Friday 4 July, 21:00 BST)

Argentina v Belgium (Saturday 5 July, 17:00 BST)

Netherlands v Costa Rica (Saturday 5 July, 21:00 BST)

They all look like good games, Belgium clearly have a chance against Argentina. Netherlands should beat Costa Rica. France will hopefully beat Germany, but Colombia Brazil is practically uncallable!

Am I misreading or is this a bizarre synopsis by the NYT on their main page:

The United States was eliminated from the World Cup by Belgium despite a memorable performance from goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The goalie is a defensive role, whereas a soccer game is won by scoring more goals than the other team. Howard's performance kept the margin of defeat low, but couldn't have affected the number of goals the US scored.

The Times is not really America's go-to paper for sports news. It's not even New Yorkers' go-to paper for sports. I'm not sure which paper would be these days because the Internet has made everything all topsy-turvy. It looks like the New York Daily News' homepage at the moment is running headline about Howard that seems to have been written by an editor that's heard of soccer.

I don't see the problem, TBH. The aim of a soccer team is not simply to score x goals, but to score one or more goals at one end than they let in at the other, and Tim Howard played a memorable part in the team's attempt to do that. However, the team overall was not able to achieve that aim, and was therefore eliminated.

To be fair, not all of those shots were aimed right. More than a dozen had a chance of hitting the box though. Thanks to Howard the end result was not BEL 15-0 USA. That would have been painful. Apparently Howard's good work set a new World Cup record, says the DailyMail.

Gyan - without that memorable performance the score would have been 8 - 0 to Belgium , and the game would have effectively been over after about half an hour. Look how many shots he stopped last night! Its not his fault that Belgium have class all through the team, Courtois, Kompany, Hazard, Lukaku, Origi etc, and on paper, should have beaten the USA easily by about 4 - 0.

So it is perfectly accurate - this is football - you can describe a player on a losing team as playing memorably or magnificently.

marienbad: you can describe a player on a losing team as playing memorably or magnificently.

Of course you can, and I didn't dispute that. The NYT said US eliminated despite Howard's great performance. It is not in a goalie's power to win the game except by stopping equalizer goals. Which wasn't the case here.
posted by Gyan at 5:47 AM on July 2, 2014

I genuinely don't understand the problem.

Tim Howard gave a great performance. His great performance involved stopping balls from going into the US goal on a large number of occasions. That is definitionally a good performance by a goalie.

Despite that great performance, the US as a team was unable to fulfil the necessary conditions to advance into the quarter finals, because the performance of other members of the team, whose performance is judged by other standards, was not good enough to result in the US having scored more goals than Belgium. Therefore, the US was eliminated despite a great performance by Tim Howard.

If the NYT had said "Tim Howard's failure to score two goals, despite a good performance in other areas, sent the US out of the World Cup", that would be a bad synopsis.

Cameron was, I suspect, secretly playing for Belgium. Or to a 6-foot tall invisible rabbit.

I feel that this game and the reactions to it show the subjectivity of the watching experience. I didn't think Cameron did so bad other than one not fabulous clearance and an early yellow.

A quote about the statistics: "Cameron attempted 81 passes with a completion rate of 81% only Bradley of the USA bettered this.Cameron recovered possession 8 times, blocked 4 shots, made 6 tackles, took on an opponent 4 times completing it on all occasions. Of his 81 passes, 27 were passes in the attacking 1/3rd only bettered by 4 players on the pitch."

So, did he play badly or not? Twitter was divided, by the way.

This is more of a linguistic problem, I think. The wording "despite [...] performance" implies a certain degree of proactivity, but a goalie, by definition, is reactive.

I approve, except that National was already renamed to Ronald Reagan Airport during a fit of naming things after the guy some time in the nineties. The wording "despite [...] performance" implies a certain degree of proactivity, but a goalie, by definition, is reactive.

That's not true, though. I mean, all football players are reactive in the sense that they respond to external stimuli. Leo Messi cannot make other players pass to him, or control the accuracy with which they pass; all he can do is take action in response to the significant probability that they will, and his best guess as to where the ball will go, based on his understanding of his team's tactics.

A goalie responds to stimuli, and generally responds to most stimuli taking place in the other half of the pitch by staying on their line and keeping an eye on the ball. But they are clearly proactive players, in the sense that they make decisions about where to position themselves to intercept crosses, whether to come out or stay on their line when a forward is through and a defender is running back to cover, whether once the ball is claimed to throw it quickly to a full-back or boot it upfield hoping for a break.

Goalkeepers do not usually score goals, and do not generally play in the outfield - although there are exceptions to both of these rules. Pat Jennings scored from a goal kick in the 1967 charity shield, Alex Stepney scored two penalties for Manchester United in 1973 and Mexico's Jorge Campos was notorious for taking the ball upfield. There's also a tradition, seen in the Switzerland game, of goalkeepers coming up for corners and free kicks in the last moments of a crucial game, which occasionally results in goals scored by keepers.

However, their performance even when they do not score goals is still a part of the game of football they are in. So, for example, the official EUFA match report for the semi-final of the 1992 European Championship between Denmark and the Netherlands opens:
Peter Schmeichel saved Marco van Basten's spot kick to send Denmark through to a final against Germany.
Is this incorrect? I would say not - Schmeichel's penalty save was a key factor in the final scoreline. Howard's performance was also a key factor in the final scoreline. However, in spite of this performance, the US was eliminated at the end of the match.

So, did he play badly or not? Twitter was divided, by the way.

Cameron played very well 85% of the time, and made a couple of spectacular howlers. So, it's easy to see why there's a split opinion of him.

I'm still wondering about Beckermann. My only guess why he sat was that he was on a yellow card *and* the most likely person on the team to get another Yellow Card and have to sit.

The biggest problem we had was the midfield, and a big part of that problem was losing Altidore. This moved Dempsey from the #10 to the striker role, and Bradley up to a sort of #10. Neither is the best play for them.

While I agreed with Klinsmann about leaving Donvan off the squad, one has to wonder -- if we had him, he's the logical replacement for Altidore when he went down. That leaves Dempsey and Bradley in their usual slots. But, you know, you only pick 22, and three of them are goalies. You don't assume that someone is going to get hurt in the first 20 minutes and never play again. If you are assuming that, then, well, why take them at all?

What I wish is that Klinsmann went to Julian Green sooner. It's clear that he -- not Bedoya, not Wondo -- was the striker, and that let Dempsey and Bradley move back to the normal slots. I am really looking forward to a 24 year old Julian Green as the lead striker for the US.

And finally, after a few hours and some sleep, I can say this without hurting myself. DAMMIT WONDO ONE FREAKING DECENT TOUCH AND WE WON THAT GAME.

Upcoming: 2015 WWC qualifications. The USWNT and Mexico have byes to the final stage of the qualifying round, Canada, as host, has already qualified for the World Cup. We play Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and four as-yet-determined Caribbean teams in the final qualifiers. The top three teams go to the WWC (along with Canada) and the 4th placed team plays the third place team from CONMEBOL for the last qualifying slot.

The question is can the USWMT redeem themselves from their performance at the 2014 Algarve Cup, which ended up with them last in their group and 7th overall, by far their worst performance -- in the four years before, they were 1st, 1st, 3rd and 1st. The new USWNT coach, Tom Sermanni, used it almost as a proving grounds, esp. with the back line.

It feels strange not to be in here watching footy and chatting about it with everyone. Wonder how many will turn up for the rest of the tournament. I will be here/wherever we are as I am dying to know how it all ends - its like a fantastic TV series where you want to see it through to the end to see what happens.

Klinny: "Every player on the field made their country proud with this performance in this World Cup."

Also, USA fans - check out the top rated comment on this BBC article:

"England claim that they give everything for the shirt. But did you watch the US last night? - that was giving everything for the shirt. Not one pundit would put any one of those USA players in the England team, yet they play way better than England. Why? Desire. Passion. Maybe our mutli-millionaire footballers have lost the concept of what truly playing for the shirt is."

Seeing as England has one of the largest and definitely the oldest footballing cultures on the planet, and many many thousands of highly knowledgeable fans, that's pretty high praise indeed.

The worst cognitive dissonance I ever had with my username -- which I've used online since 1985, and I get grumpy if I can't use it -- was at a Japanese restaurant in Epcot where the waitress was wearing a name tag that said "Eriko."

I wanted that name tag. I didn't want to get a lifetime ban from all of Disney's properties, so I didn't take it. Apparently Eriko is a common female name in Japan. Ain't life wonderful?

Speaking of Disney. I'm going there, so I'll miss most of the QF matches Friday -- might catch the 2nd half of Brazil Columbia, may not catch the matches on the 5th at all, but will probably get part of them, and will have to figure out how to catch the most match time on the 8th for the 1st Semi. I'll definitly be watching the second Semi and the final two matches.

The good news is I'll be able to watch what I can of the QF matches properly -- with beer in my hand.

And I'm hoping everyone else will join us. See marienbad bitch about top level professionals unable to cope with the offsides rule! See us come up with new nicknames for the goalies! I'm in a particular mood, so I'll quick hit the rest:

'30 Uruguay: Awkward composition, like there're two separate posters joined together. It's not the outstretched goalie that makes it, it's that weird arbitrary orange bar with the zigzaggy arrow. The whole thing works despite itself.

'34 Italy: It's a poster, so it must be promoting a new issue of a magazine, or muscle salve, or something. A sporting event? Okay. Somebody heard of Constructivism recently I guess.

'38 France: One of the few I'd really want on my wall, but it looks like it's advertising a delicious aperitif, so it kind of suffers in the same way the '34 poster does.

'50 Brazil: Ruined by the awkwardly-drawn foot, a big black blotch in the middle of the composition. I like the typography, though.

'54 Switzerland: Another one I'd want on my wall. The ball is the sun, it evades us all, but the net will catch it. Or something. Try not to think too hard about possible metaphors I guess. Unlike '50's accidental naivety, '54's is knowingly wallowing in a modernist and Calderesque abstraction. This will be a motif that waxes and wanes from here forward, usually without much success.

'58 Sweden: Kind of doing what the Peter Max poster does, but not half as well. Technically impressive for being designed with only four spot colors, but unfortunately the drawing is pretty stiff.

'62 Chile: This looks weirdly contemporary: Somebody in 1992 could have made it with nth-generation photocopied clip art, some laser printer fonts and a copy of PrintShop Pro. Except it manages to be more high concept than that makes it sound. To contemporary eyes it suffers typographically, but I'm not sure it seemed that bad at the time.

'66 England: Well, the lion looks happy, I guess. They tried.

'70 Mexico: Football is serious business. So very, very serious. Here is a chart of seriousness, and the chart looks like a football. (This poster was designed to be printed in multiple colors. Sidings plastered with a variety of these must have looked awesome.)

'74 West Germany: I have a feeling a better reproduction of this poster would completely change my impression of it; right now it looks like a really lovely drawing blopped on top of some paste-boarded text. (In fact, here's a better photo, and the ball comes forth as a profound part of the drawing -- and there are some variations with treatments for the text that aren't as well mannered and probably don't work as well at full poster size)

'78 Argentina: Optical effects riffing off of the poster design trends in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, but lacking the draftsmanship that would bring it off. A could-have-been.

'82 Spain: Designed by Joan Miró, so you know what you're going to get, and you do. Lovely but hard to tell what's going on, so it's the perfect soccer poster for your friend who likes posters and hates soccer.

'86 Mexico: So very, very macho. Unf. Other than that, it looks more like a travel poster to me.

'90 Italy: Even more banal than the '86 poster. Nice typography, anyway. Moving on.

'94 USA: As noted above.

'98 France: An interesting, colorful paint-and-collage piece pooped on by the mandatory branding element slapped right below the title, as if this is a corporate report, not a poster. The almost tunnel-like centering of the composition probably works a lot better if this were four feet tall, rather than a JPG on my computer monitor.

'02 Korea/Japan: Another one I'd want on my wall, and probably the best abstract-squiggly-brushstroke-drawing of a football field in this whole suite. Just the right balance of texture and flat color.

'06 Germany: Oh look, a constellation of stars formed overnight, to look like football stitching. Let's go to Disneyworld. Germany has long been a center of brilliant poster design, none of which has influenced this in the slightest.

'10 South Africa: The beauty of the composition and the cleverness of making a head out of the continent is kind of undermined by the horror that the head has no body. It has been pulled loose and is flying away, alongside the ball.

'14 Brazil: The heavy thumb of mandatory branding requirements that started pressing down in '98 has finally completely obliterated the print surface sixteen years later. The entire poster really seems to live to serve the branding mark, rather than work on its own. It's a lovely intricate bit of artwork, but this could serve as well as an ad for soda pop, or insurance, or sports wear, or any of the other few dozen corporations paying for sponsorship rights.

FIFA mulling over fourth extra-time substitute for 2018 World Cup:
Houllier said changing the rules could see fewer players struggle with muscle problems in high-intensity matches.

"It's a good idea. Only in extra time. Maybe if someone is injured, why not?" the former France coach said.

So far, substitutes have scored 29 goals after coming off the bench in Brazil, already a World Cup record with eight matches left to play. The previous mark was 23 at the 2006 tournament in Germany, FIFA said.

"Substitutes play such an important part because they come with a freshness and attitude," Houllier said. "Nearly a quarter of the goals have been scored in the final 15 minutes of the game."

We could post a link to either here or wherever we do the QFs in the JulyByWomen meta to encourage women (or self-identifying female people) who love teh footy to come and join in. The more the merrier!

Ha, like mentioned before, I'll be putting up a new FPP for the purpose of QFs discussion and I'll add the tag to support the project. I'm happy to post a link in the meta as well.

Generally, 1000+ comment threads tend to load slower (for me and others I assume). We have over 560 comments here already and it's still one more day to go. I predict we'll need more than one new post anyway.

Apparently the world needed this. Which does not mean the world deserves it.

I know its early, but is anyone interested in meeting up for the semi final next tuesday (4pm) in NYC? I was thinking of a place in midtown (opia, warning: autoplay) that had a great atmosphere for the 2010 matches. MeMail me.

Ah, Juanito from 1970. You're so...inappropriate.

Because he's wearing a traditional hat from that country?

No. It's the exposed midriff; which Pique, a moustachioed jalapeño pepper wearing a sombrero, is showing too in 1986. Inappropriate is probably not the right word. How about just plain odd?

Oh, I'll give you that. Pique is definitely odd, but fantastic!

I too thought eriko was a Japanese woman, despite having a pretty identical username scheme. Oops.

For anyone who needs a World Cup fix while waiting for tomorrow: Brasil x Suécia - Final da Copa de 1958 - Completo. The commentary is in Portuguese except when the radio tape is missing, which it unfortunately is for most of the first half (so you get Swedish commentary, which is much less exciting), but you can catch the names, and the action is what matters—it just gets better and better. Watch Didi feed the ball to Garrincha and Pelé and enjoy the ensuing fireworks; about fifteen minutes into the second half the announcer shouts "E um maestro do futebol Didi!" and you can only agree. Shortly after that Garrincha mesmerizes two Swedish defenders by dancing around the ball—they've obviously never seen anything like these Brazilians—and there's an astonishing last-second surprise ending.

Via BBC: "[Landon] Donovan was left out of the squad and, after USA's last-16 defeat to Belgium, feels the German manager's tactical approach was wide of the mark.

"As a whole, I think tactically, the team was not set up to succeed," Donovan, 32, tells MLS.com. "They were set up in a way that was opposite from what they've been the past couple years, which is opening up, passing, attacking.""

Yeah, like playing an open, passing, attacking game against Belgium would have paid fucking dividends. Besides, it was fairly open anyway, and at some points end-to-end.

Brazilian commentators during the Belgium-U.S. game were of the opinion that Klinsmann had made the correct decision in leaving Landon Donovan out of the team, and very critical of Donovan and his sabbatical from football - nobody should feel secure about their place on the team after taking a sabbatical like he did.

Hey, where are we going to be chatting. I'll almost certain miss kickoff, but should be there for the 2nd half.

Saw a SCHWIENSTIEGER jersey at ORD today and had to work to avoid laughing.
