I meet clever people all the time. In fact, last May when my husband and I were vacationing in Canada, we met upwards of three clever people.

Maybe if your corporate overlords would spring for a battalion of well-compensated moderators, your on-line turf wouldn't become saddled with idiocy and you just might attract enough eyeballs that matter in order to get more advertising revenues and pull a profit.

But what do I know?

Did you even read the article? It's clear you have poor reading comprehension as your comment speaks volumes about your ignorance. You're just cherry picking facts so you can build up your straw man and make ad hominem attacks. That said, why don't you try reading some more books as your education seems to be lacking? SMH.

I'll tell you what my new favorite type of comment is. I check out the deleted posts blog, and look for the ones that say "Spammer; banned" or "Self-link; banned". I then click to the user's (disabled) profile and look at the comments they made before they made their fatal FPP — like this.

They are the soylent green of comments. The poster is trying to build up their profile on the site, but don't want to draw attention or have anyone respond 'cause they don't really care. They are ultra-bland, often just "I love this", but if you look closer they're only weakly connected to the post, and have an implicit uncomfortableness about them, like someone trying to fit in in a social circle they really don't know.

They sometimes remind me of comments I'll make when I just want to get the thread into my Recent Activity. I fear the day when I discover that I favorited one of them. It'll mean my ability to distinguish between people and astroturfing is fatally flawed.

I've gone through a few periods where I've done this, too, and there was one new user person (this was several years ago and I don't remember the subject at all, so it's probably impossible to find again) who made two blow off comments and then one actually good actually reasonably insightful comment that (I think?) actually picked up a small handful of favorites. And then a couple days later, selflink FPP, banned.

I had never seen the deleted posts blog before. I enjoyed picturing the author of this post scrolling through the site to find a topic where they could quickly shoot of something relevant. Then--what luck!--they see a post titled High-dollar trolling and think "Perfect! That's for me!"

(It was actually not a bad comment though).

This isn't an article. This isn't anything.

It's actually a pretty clever little bit of snarky agitprop and journalistic catharsis. It's saying, "This kind of thing must be worth reading, because if it isn't, why does it exist?" And, well, it isn't, so why does that shit exist? What is the point of newspaper websites' comment sections?
