The Way We Eat Dinner Now.

Photographer Miho Aikawa explores how we eat through pictures taken in New Yorkers' homes. Some of Aikawa’s subjects still used dinner as a time to socialize, but over the computer or phone rather than in person. “I don't think having dinner with a cellphone and a laptop is bad or wrong. One of my subjects was talking with her grandmother via Skype during the dinner and I think that can enhance the pleasure of the table,” she said. -- (slSlate)

I truly don't take it upon myself to care much how others choose to live if they are not harming me. Their choice(s). But to suggest that skyping with grandmother enhances dinner gets me to ask, Do You Skype With Her Every Dinner? or is that some bs justification for that which you do but are for some reason a bit uptight admitting to?

There is far too much eating on a damn bed then I am comfortable with. If it wasn;t for marathon TV watching during dinner me and So would never get any time together during the week.

So the consensus is that people eat around 8?

That cat is adorable.

Only the people with the cat are actually enjoying wine with their meal.

I can't sit opposite a person and eat a meal without wine.

I'm with the couple having a bottle of wine and a nice-looking pizza. The ones with the fat cat. They're also one of the few that appear to be enjoying their meal rather than treating it as a trial to endure.

My cats are much less polite than the cat in this link.

Chubby Cat is not a food beggar at the table but she is definitely a "If you are eating dinner, then I get to eat dinner too!" showcat, despite having been fed well before we sit down to eat.

There's a glass of wine on the table with the two guys.

Also, i am now convinced to have a white trim with racing green walls for the main room, thanks Slate!

I can't figure out the pattern for why some photos mention what sort of food it is and others do not.

>to suggest that skyping with grandmother enhances dinner

When I was a toddler in the early 70s my mother used to put me in front of the TV at mealtimes to distract me, as I wouldn't eat otherwise.

Oh hey I thought these looked familiar.

But this is a good kick in the pants for me that "just because your roommate is out of town it doesn't mean it's free rein to eat at the coffee table, go back to sitting at the dining room table like a civilized adult for God's sake".

although maybe i am eating naked

Somewhere, somehow, we decided that our minds Must Be Occupied during dinner. I started reading a book at the table around age 7 or so (mid '70s), because my parents were news junkies and spent the whole time discussing the nuances of local politics that were completely over my head. To this day, if I have to make the choice between eating with a book (or, in a pinch, TV) or going without, I will go without. And I've never been in a relationship where we've Ate Dinner Together more than once or twice, so I have no idea what would happen then.

Most of my friends are this way too. Is it a generational thing?

I don't think so. I think since the advent of TV dinners that most families (or individuals) park themselves in front of a TV or a book/newspaper to eat. The only times my husband and I really don't do that is when we are out to eat.

It's admittedly hard for me to channel 13-year-old me at this point in my life, but I really can't imagine (even as a teenager) having my parent make me a nice meal, and my taking it and eating it alone in my room.

And stop eating Italian food in the damn bed, you heathen!

Also, damn these people eat late. I get grumpy when dinner comes after 6.
