Crude Translation: "Happy Heartbeat"

Those robotic dancers of J-pop, World Order (previously-ly-ly-ly) have a new short video titled "Jungle Wakudoki" in which they encounter a guy in a gorilla suit (as well as some oddly Caucasian jungle folk). It's part of a promotion for Toyota Asia Pacific which includes a contest to win a trip to Tokyo by uploading a video of you "doing the Wakudoki".

O.K., now watch it again, but this time see if you can spot the basketball game.

Man. I love me some World Order but two things stand out:

1) It starts out kinda cool and then just goes....weird....
2) The caucasians in this video need to be edited out of it. Entirely.

I really like World Order, especially the brilliant Mind Shift video.

I don't want to break Thumper's Rule but I can't say I like this very much, I'm afraid... the music does not really sound like them (did they write this? or did Toyota?) and the transformation of the heartbeat move they have pulled off so well earlier here just seems like a cheap hook.

The "jungle folk" are the worst of it, though - even worse than the fake gorilla.

That said, thank you for posting this, oneswellfoop - it is good to know what World Order is up to these days.

Don't know anything about these guys, but based on their previous videos this seems... very much not like them at all. Which is weird because Japan seems to do the "pop stars doing commercial jingles!" thing rather well, both in that the songs are decent and that everyone just accepts that that's an okay thing for pop stars to do and it's not weird at all.

This seems weird in a way that it probably shouldn't.

Although it explores similar themes, the video lacks the visual subtlety and musical depth of this 1980's masterpiece.

Last I had heard, they'd done a series of commercials/music videos for Asiana Airlines, in the same vein as the Toyota video above. I'll admit to not following them closely enough to know what else they're doing. But making music video/commercials with more or less product intrusion, as the sponsor warrants, seems to be how they stay fed. So good on them, but it dampens the surprise that they might occasionally have to surrender too much creative control to the sponsor's demands.

especially the brilliant Mind Shift video.

Interestingly, they do the Wakudoki in the Mind Shift video. I hope they enter to win a trip to Tokyo - it was well done.
