When the lights went out again

75 years ago today, barely thirty years after the end of the what was then called the Great War, the German Wehrmacht blitzkrieged into Poland and the Free City of Danzig.

Within two days, France and Great Britain were at war with Nazi Germany, launching the Second World War in Europe. In 17 days, the Soviet Union invaded and occupied the east of Poland. Within 40 days, Warsaw had fallen.
