Maaan, all I have to do is SEE the words "Angry Samoans - Lights Out" and that thing is stuck in my head. And will be there for a week for sure.

I think I'm going to like this thread ...

. . . the set piece action scenes would have to be trimmed down to 52 seconds, for starters.

Thank you so much for this thread!

Ah, my first band covered that Bad Brains song back in '82. And the "Not So Quiet" album has one of my favorite Flipper songs.

Cool; what about some Dead Kennedys? Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables has some nice selections to choose from.

For extra credit: open these all at once in different tabs. It's pretty great.

Anyway this mostly just reminds me of when Bush II got elected, and my friend said "well at least music will get good again".

Sadly it didn't.

OK - so... My first exposure to Punk was a friend who was "in the know" and had a shitton of stuff that I copied/she copied for me. DRI, DK, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Sex Pistols, MinuteMen.

Then, I recall an album I think I may have only had the last half of, and I'm almost positive it was Circle Jerks. I feel like it was something about suburbanites, maybe something with BBQ in the lyrics or something? I'm sorry if this is so vague. Hell I remember it was my white tape and DRI was on the other side, so... Now if only y'all had the tapes I had!

Also, I'll humbly add (Tulsa's very own) N.O.T.A. to the mix.

I don't think so, whuppy. I'm almost positive what I'm thinking of sounded like Keith Morris, and I think in a skate shop when I heard the track on, the guy said it was Circle Jerks, but when I tried to listen to some of the albums on youtube, none of the tracks I heard sounded familiar. I just have a feeling I won't ever figure it out.

And you can tell the President to suck my fucking dick
Does that sound intelligent? Like I give a fucking frick
Tell the FBI put me on the list because Lennon wasn't this dangerous
Call the Christians, tell them all that I'm taller than Jesus
They tore down the parking lot and put in a parking lot and what do they got?
And if you followed the plot then you know I'm not going to give it a second thought
Yeah, let those pigs play because they'll all fucking pay
Yeah, karma's a fact, that shit'll come back someday
And I'll be like

So here's the thing I'm noticing. People always say punk sucks now. I'll agree that we're never gonna have 80's hardcore again, but we're also not gonna have "California Love," "Bad," Folsom Prison Blues," or Beethoven's 5th symphony. But people carry on. Punk's not dead.

I think I'll come back with some songs of punk bands you can still go see. They exist, they're great, and I'll see you at The Fest.

The "Not so quiet on the Western Front" album was all SF bands. Those early compilations helped to define entire scenes. They also served to inform kids what was going on in other cities while putting out music from bands that most likely couldn't afford to print their own records yet. I guess compilation albums are a thing of the past but they were pretty vital back then.

I will say this- listening to this stuff at the gym really helps when you want to cut a 45 minute workout down to 35 minutes or so.

Here are some punk bands you can go and see if you're still up and kicking:

Bane-Superhero

Nothington-A Mistake

La Plebe-Plebe Por Vida

Too Many Daves-When Getting Awesome Goes Wrong

None More Black-Dinner's For Suckers

7 Seconds-Young Till I Die (yep, they're still going)

A Wilhelm Scream-Me Vs. Morressy in the Pretentious Contest (The Ladder Match)

Dillinger Four-Doublewhiskeycokenoice (yep!)

Night Birds-Born to Die in Suburbia

Hot Water Music-No Division (It's the whole album but you kind of need to hear the whole thing)

Lifetime-Knives, Bats, New Tats

No More-Radiation Tower

Look Back and Laugh-Truth and Error (They're not together anymore, but they're also the best female fronted punk band I've ever seen so they get in the on the list anyway.)

Paint it Black-Labor Day

Radon-Lying to You

Propaghandi-A Speculative Fiction

Toys That Kill-They Tied Up All Our Lace

Underground Railroad to Candyland-Stop Crying Kid

So that's a sample of what punk rock looks like now. And give it up for the 80s hardcore because none of these bands would exist without them, but you should hit up a punk rock concert this weekend. There has to be something that appeals to you,

I think I still have a bad tape copy of that Western Front compilation in a box somewhere. And all or almost all of the other songs on equally badly copied tapes.

Of course, I haven't had a tape player for about a decade, but I can't make myself get rid of the tapes.

Dicks, Big Boys, Husker Du, Crucifucks, were always way too faggy and sophisticated to be continuous with the subculture of breakdowns and backwards baseball caps. It's punk rock, man!

This playlist cannot not have Dicks Hate The Police ...wall of shredded glass guitar, the bass slides in, thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump, Gary Floyd's moan... this song still gives me the chills, should be way more well known than it is, but you shall never have it like you have those buzzcocks songs, mass culture, no you shall not...

Here's a mostly hardcore set I posted when Reagan died. I called it:

I Shot Reagan

D.I. – Reagan Der Fuhrer
D.O.A. – Fucked Up Ronnie
Dead Kennedys – We’ve Got A Bigger Problem Now
Dayglo Abortions- Ronald McReagan
Suicidal Tendencies – I Shot the Devil
Crucifucks – Hinkley Had A Vision
Ramones – Bonzo Goes To Bitburg
Accelerators – Reaganland
Shattered Faith – Reagan Country
MDC – Bye Bye Ronnie

Sorry for the late post, I had trouble migrating to WordPress and just discovered I had to repair the page. If anyone has trouble with the audio, send me a MeMail. Wordpress sucks.
