Death of a podcaster

R.I.P., the Vincent Price of podcasts Lawrence Santoro (old but useful site), writer, director, and actor, passed this July. But he might be best known for his work as a podcaster, most notably through his Tales to Terrify.

Other writers and podcasters mourned, while the District of Wonders (previously) observed a week of radio silence.

To get a sense of the richness and scope of Santoro's audio work, check out the more than 130 Tales to Terrify shows in their archives. Or combine his writing and audio performance by listening to the heartbreaking, NSFW, and powerful “Little Girl Down the Way”.

I'm sorry to be hearing about his work for the first time this way, but look forward to checking out the podcasts.

I first encountered him on StarShipSofa in the days before the Great Sundering, when Tony gave us so much more. I always thought him more as a contemporary Arch Oboler, at least in terms of voice. His horror fiction was, as I recall, at the low end consistently good and in the case of, "Little Girl Down the Way," excellent and deeply affecting. His novella, "Lord Dickens' Declaration," was an odd diversion into science fiction for him though an interesting one. Done as part of a fundraiser for Spider and Jeanne Robinson during Jeanne Robinson's battle with cancer it was a story that was meant to explain the cover image of StarShipSofa Stories Volume 1. More of his writing can be found at his website. My condolences to his family.

"Little Girl Down the Way" was based on… true remains. One of the few horror stories that genuinely horrified me.

This was a guy that loved what he was doing; you could hear it in every word of the podcast. It was pretty charming. I heard about this a few weeks back and it really bummed me out. I hadn't checked in for a long while after my daughter was born, and when I finally got around to it he was gone. I listened to the podcast a lot in bed while my wife was very pregnant (in case you didn't know, snoring sometimes becomes a thing later in a pregnancy), sometimes 4 or 5 episodes in a week. My favorite story wasn't one read by him, but I'd recommend the episode with the story The Wild Hunt if you are looking for a place to start. Probably the best audiobook type thing I ever heard. The ones he did read, you can definite understand why he's called the Vincent Price of podcasts--he is fully in character and turned up to 11. I will miss him.
