This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a really weird choice of framing. If someone wants to repost it with a more representative setup that'd be fine. -- restless_nomad

“Susan made a choice,” he said. “She made a choice to pass me on the right, she made a choice to cut back in front of me.

Victim blaming level 1000.

FTA: He also said he suffered from fibromyalgia. The condition that triggers widespread pain can cause fatigue, sleepiness, moodiness and memory lapses. He said he took two drugs for the condition, fluoxetine, an anti-depressant, and Mobic, an anti-inflammatory. They can cause drowsiness or tiredness.

So, I mean, attention to how many hours truckers are awake is really important, but in this case, this man also took drugs that made his situation worse.

Bouch, who is a Baptist, said God had a plan for Susan Slattery to die that day and for him to drive the truck.

Just fuck no.

It's a collective action problem. Drivers know their limits; they need to push back on the work culture that supports driving beyond HOS limits.

God didn't kill that woman; capitalism did.

The article is about so much more than this accident and that messed up quote.

Like, I can understand as a human why you need to tell yourself certain things. I don't understand why you end up thinking this particular thing is something you need to tell the family members of the people who were killed. Better to either issue a total apology for their sake or if you can't do that for whatever personal or legal reasons, shut the hell up.

Agreed, the pull quote is a weird place to focus.

First thought: yeah, no, fuck this guy.

Second thought: maybe it is kind of wrong for me to knee jerk judge this person as I myself have never caused anyone's death by negligent homicide and jail sucks a lot and

Final though: yeah, no, fuck this guy

But yes, the central section of the article, which I first thought was tedious filler getting in the way of the Real Human Story, is actually the most interesting part of it.
