That's right. And it's one of our conservative own (so to speak), so we REALLY don't wanna hear it, ok? "Our conservative own?" What the hell does that mean? I have no clue what Noelle Bush's politics are and don't really care. I also don't judge her father or her uncle by HER actions. Funny, her problems in the past were never newsworthy... She's a big girl who's made a lot of mistakes in the past. Noelle Bush's problems with drugs and the law have never been some huge secret, in fact, it's part of the reason that Jeb Bush takes an active interest in drug enforcement: because he deals with the effects of illicit drug use within his own family on a daily basis.

My point is that this is a seven year old arrest which resulted in a fine, no jail time, and very likely an expunged record after a year. The person in question is a private citizen and an adult. We've got the conjecture in a short article which was written without knowledge of key facts -- like the final disposition of Ms. Bush's record in the Arizona case -- and with an extraordinarily general and highly inappropriate statement from a supposed "official" from Florida whose position within county government was conspicuously unnamed (she could be a tax collector, for all we know) and that's all. What's it mean in the grand scheme of things? Very little. We already know that this is a troubled young woman. Battering around more jabs and jokes about her serves no purpose. Further allusions about preferential treatment are nothing but smear without substance. Continuing to try to suggest that the foibles of the children of elected officials has some bearing on their work is a reach, at best. So therefore, I reiterate, why is this discussion worthy?

Look, if you remember the Jenna-Bush's-homework thread then you know that nobody likes dopey-Bush-girl news like I do. But I shoplifted my ass off in high school, to support my reading habit. Oh, man. By senior year, my Polaroid hung in the manager's office of every bookstore on Fifth Avenue from Doubleday (where Prada is now, I think — damn, I wonder what I could make it out of there with!) and Ballantine down to Scribner's and Brentano's (all long gone as well). And it made me the hyper-literate geek I am today. On the other hand, I am rather curious to know how and why Ms Bush got a new Social Security number since then — so far as I know there's no non-creepy reason to do this.

I despise that Bush is president now. I believe that his brother helped him to steal the election. That said, I also detest gossip and news about family members, as much as I hated all of the Chelsea-bashing that took place during the Clinton years. Have some class and leave it alone. . . .it's hard enough to be in that position without a nation-wide pack of yowling media hyenas watching your every misstep.
