Paul Ford strikes again:
I’ve been booting up fake machines and tearing them down, one after the other, and not doing much besides. Machines I’ve only heard of, arcade games I never played, and machines I never used. Software about which I was always curious.”
A follow up of sorts to his five works of the software canon (previously) where Ford wanders through a brief history of computing, including Amiga’s launch, Xerox Alto, MacOS & Smalltalk, Plan 9! LISP, NeXT, lots of Apple, and a quick intro to emulation. It’s also a narrative of nostalgia, parenthood, death and a teddy bear.
