Can anyone tell me if the characters in this are part of the joke?

Yes, though I don't think I get the joke.

It's the Chinese word 插画 chāhuà 'illustration', which breaks into the Japanese イラストレーシヨン irasutorēshiyon (which is a transliteration of the English word).

(Or maybe the word itself doesn't matter and the joke is just the hànzì breaking into kana... his other cartoons are fun but not exactly deep.)

I like his funny little observations about how things resemble other things--the saw that looks like an owl, the lighter that looks like two people hugging.

Loved the anthropomorphized char siu bao and toast. Took me a minute to figure out the scowling round faces were char siu bao standing in a bamboo steamer.

The shift in looking at everyday objects differently reminded me almost immediately of Don Hertzfeldt. I'm linking to his wiki rather than actual video because Hertzfeldt's animations are often NSFW.

I am pretty sure I would pay actual money for a toilet paper holder like this.

Not deep? This one is somehow philosophical and disturbing... like it tells us something we don't want to know about ourselves (or maybe it's just me)
