"Turning liberal Zionism on its head."

On November 23rd, the Israeli cabinet approved contentious draft legislation (NYTimes) that emphasizes Israel’s Jewish character above its democratic nature. While the bill has not been voted on in the Knesset, the governing coalition is in danger of collapse as Netanyahu is threatening to call elections.

The issue is complicated, and there have been a number of articles offering details and explanations:

"What is the Jewish state bill?" (Telegraph)
"Is Israel Jewish first or democratic first? This new bill may force Israelis to choose." (Vox)
"5 Myths About the Basic Law Proposal: “Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People”" (Jewish Press)

1,000 people protested the bill and it's being attacked as "turning liberal Zionism on its head" or that it "disenfranchises both Jewish and non-Jewish Israelis since we will all live in a diminished democracy". The bill might is being called a clarification of "the values of the state" and that it is brave for Israel "coming out as a Jewish state".

Israel's President criticized the bill and former President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres attacked the bill as well.

Others have said this is "much ado over very little substance". Tzipi Livni, leader of Likud and a member of the governing coalition, opposes the bill and is also being criticized.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is opposed to the bill and a Palestinian activist wrote how "the 'Jewish state bill' will simply put on paper what is already a reality in apartheid Israel."

This post was deleted for the following reason: This appears to be about bills that are explicitly not going to be put up for vote as currently written, and so this is an I/P fight we don't need to have yet. -- restless_nomad
