If you're only going to watch one three second video on how to cook shrimp, make it this one.

I liked that the shrimp seemed to be waving at the camera once they had been launched.

I did not think the title of this could possible be accurate and now I think all cooking demonstrations need flames and death metal

I'd seen this making the rounds and I rolled my eyes thinking it'd be another lol-japan thing but it is not. It goes places, man.

I suspect the shrimp might be a tad undercooked.

Didn't you follow the directions? You're supposed to do it in slow motion

That last turn of the head from "what the hell am I looking at" to "what the hell is wrong with you" was absolutely perfect.

Yeah! What was the question that provoked this stare?
posted by hat_eater at 11:48 PM on December 1, 2014

hat_eater, the one woman says to the other "Oishi desho?" which is essentially "Delicious, isn't it!" in Japanese.

This is a beautiful commercial, and the shriek at the firing of the shrimp canon is what really sold it for me. I wonder if they actually told her what would happen when the button was pushed or not. If not, well, that's sort of in keeping with Japanese TV. If she knew, hell, that's great acting.

It's worth noting that the framing of the commercial is also a giant parody of Kewpie's "three-minute cooking" series of rather long commercials

Can anybody translate what one woman says to the other at the end that gets that slow take?

It's an awesome reaction and I"m dying to know what it is.

My guess - something like, "Want to do it again?"

I can't tell if some of you think this is real--it's just a funny commercial, you couldn't actually cook the shrimp this way. It's like those videos of Americans deep frying turkeys in huge vats of oil. Impossible!

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fry.

(I'm kidding about that turkey part, in case it wasn't clear. My uncle and aunt did that once, seen it with my own eyes. So much damned oil! That said, what's shown in this commercial is not for realsies and I'm not sure if I'm not picking up on everyone being in on the joke or not.)

In this context I would totally translate it as "totes noms, amirite?"

That video is not three seconds long.

I guess it's a "Three Second (TM)" video in the sense of a "Iron Chef (TM)" video?

Oj that's a bunch of "not"s!

So you're basically saying you're not picking up on everyone being in on the following: if you propagated this technique on Ask ("what's the best way to cook shrimp") it would spur an answer thread of a mile long about how dangerous this technique is and how you will burn down your part of the town and the next, plus yet another Meta about how bad it is to post wrong answers, right?
Ain't gonna happen, is what I predict.

...all that said, I've fetched my gas burner out of the workshop, and stocked up on the Japanese deep-fry batter, just in case....

Silly person. My cousin and her husband fry three birds for Thanksgiving every year.

That video is not three seconds long.

No, but the part between hitting the big button and the shrimp crashing down on the serving plate is close to three seconds (allowing for slo-mo).
