Chef says bin Laden fled to Iran. "Osama had three offers of escape," he tells the Christian Science Monitor. "One from Iraq, one from Iran, and another from some mafia types.... We received a lot of Iranian currency, and the commanders distributed it to the soldiers," he says, adding that he received 700,000 rials ($1,400) for his own personal use." He also says that bin Laden prefers quail for dinner.

There's not really much to add here -- I doubt OBL is planning to stay in Iran. The Caucasus does sound like a more logical destination; the Chechens seem to have been some of the most ardent and loyal followers in the final days, and right now the region has the Russians stalemated, and there's much less likelihood of American assets getting wind of him.

Sorry dhartung, I just can't resist spelling out what I think of the man-child that sits in the big chair.

My reaction is based on the fortuity of, after a few weeks of speculation that OBL is dead, having 'new' reports of his making tracks for another country that just happens to be on America's shitlist. It just smacks too much of a neat narrative - chasing the supervillain - that makes a move on Iran more palatable to the public. I think it's more well-timed propaganda than real news.

Why thanks for your condecension, dhartung. My point is not whether it's likely that he went to Iran. My point is that the timing of this discovery is suspiciously close to GB's rattling of the sabre in Iran's direction.

Clever use of the asterisk, btw. I really have no idea what that word could be, and am therefore spared any potential offense. Could it be flub? forp? fazb? I'm stumped.
