The Worst Idea of All Time

Guy Montgomery and Tim Batt have a podcast. A podcast with the very appropriate title The Worst Idea of All Time. It's a bad movie review podcast, but with a horrible, hideous twist: the hosts review the same bad movie, Grown Ups 2, every week. For a year.

....the title undersells it.

This ends in cannibalism, doesn't it.

I do not understand why they do this thing

They put a twist on it, then, didn't they?

I feel like this is gonna end in murder-suicide by maybe week 10.

They... should not have done this thing.

I checked episode 1 to get a baseline reference point, and they seem fairly rational. I then jumped over to episode 38, and find that after hearing a song in the end credits and knowing a friend that was into the band, they were given what the friend believed to be "the best live album EVER." They now think REO Speedwagon's live album is "dope."

have you listened to episode 10 though? what if it's just screaming.

Season two, they only review Jack and Jill.

An idea this fundamentally and radically wrong, carried to execution, cannot help but negatively affect the whole fabric of reality -- forteana, religious mania, mass suicides, virgin births.

Ok... I'm halfway through the first episode, and TBH? I could totally listen to 52 episodes of these guys talking about this nonsense.

What.. what if they get to a year and decide to keep going?

This is amazing. What if after 52 rethinkings the movie opens up and ends up being their favourite? Through sheer repetition can any movie become great? I know it works with pop songs. Favouriting for later listens. Thanks!

Ok but what if they get to the end of the year and find that for dark unspoken reasons they are unable to stop?

My understanding has always been that taking dinosaurs off of Isla Sorna was the worst idea in the history of bad ideas, but I guess there was some room to lower that bar.

I've never seen the movie. I think I might listen to every episode for a year, and then watch it.

I'm going to go with Lead. Lead in paint, lead in gas, lead in Roman pipes.

Oh, also "Jack & Jill"

Is this something I would need to watch GU2 to understand?

Also, according to today's WSJ Rock wrote his current movie, Top Five, while on that set. So it has that going for it.

For what it's worth, Lead is easily worked and super useful. Just also extremely toxic.

I seem to remember some feature (maybe on the AV Club?) where a small group of people listened to a couple of "bad" songs ~10 times in a row and recorded their impressions after each one. IIRC, the Celine Dion song (I wanna say "It's All Coming Back to Me Now") turned out to have good staying power, but the other one--maybe something by Nickelback?--just made them angrier each time they heard it.

Is it Ghostbusters 2?

I do not understand why they do this thing.

I have seen Foodfight over 20 times. I can understand why they do it, although I don't think I can explain why. (I'd link to the Livestream, but it looks like it may finally have been taken down. I'm sad? That's a bad thing, right?)

Ooh, great timing, Fanfare just opened up to Podcasts. Who wants to have to listen and discuss this Podcast for one year?

Is it Ghostbusters 2?

The sad thing about Ghostbusters 2 is that a few halfway-decent ideas occasionally peek out between the pimping of the new logo (the better to sell more merch) and the fruitless quest to find something for Sigourney Weaver to do that's worth her time.

the fruitless quest to find something for Sigourney Weaver to do that's worth her time

To be fair, that's a problem rather larger than just Ghostbusters II.

I'm actually one of the few GB2 apologists. I like Vigo, I like Peter MacNicol and I like the mood slime. Definitely some neat ideas, but it's simply not as funny. Not even close.

On the other hand it doesn't feature Dan Aykroyd getting a blow job from a ghost. So it's got that going for it.

I'd be interested in discovering the specific aural stimulus that caused this; I get a similar reaction listening to the majority of political speeches.

Welp, this reminded me to check in on Lawrence/Julia and Julia. I guess I'm glad it ended well for him there. And by ended well, I don't just mean "ended up in rubber room."
