Given recent events that's basically "hello, can we come in and murder you?"...

...just kidding, they'll probably do it on the doorstep if anyone they don't like days no anyway.

The chief feels that these inspections by his officers can uncover firearms that the resident may not have even known were there.

Is this a thing that happens?

Can parents also ask them to look for any hidden stashes of porn?

That strikes me as a great way to get fully half of the internet to land on them. If, you know, that's what they were hoping for.

Oh, I bet they'll find drug and porn and all kinds of illegal substances that the residents didn't know about. Then they'll have no choice but to seize the house and any cash since those things were obviously used in some kind of crime, etc.

Infowars, server not found, Guns.com.

Conflating warrantless search with a search done with permission. We done here?

Unless there's explicitly an amnesty, if it's an illegal gun on your property then you could probably be held responsible for possessing it, right? So the last people you want finding it are the cops...

LOFL. I mean, really, now. I almost feel like if you're dumb enough to let them inside your house without a warrant you deserve the results, but that's uncharitable.

Yeah, somewhat weak (partisan) links here; middle link is broken.

Also, the cops don't knock on your doors asking to search your house.

You literally have to call them up.

Now, you'd have to be a fool (IMHO) to call up the police and ask them to search your house (what happens when they find your teens marijuana?), and obviously 'bad guys' aren't going to call the cops to ask to have their house searched, and then sign a waiver (unless they are really really really stoned).

"well, the joneses didn't consent to that voluntary search we asked for - we'd better keep our eyes on them"

No, because the only correct response to this request is "unless you have a properly signed search warrant, the answer is not just no, but hell no."
