It's 86 songs sampled. DENIED.

I'm excited there's a song called Alejandro Jordorowsky Flow. I'm going to have to give that a listen at some point.

I haven't been following along with much this year with the exception of YG's My Krazy Life that I discovered somewhere during the summer and hasn't really left my playlist since. I've been paying attention to a lot of the year end lists though and have been catching up a bit in the time off since Xmas. The Vince Staples EP, Hell Can Wait (first track on the sampler), was definitely a nice surprise, short and sweet clocking in at a little less than half an hour but no wasted space at all.

Wasn't a fan of the more anticipated releases this year (Oxymoron and Forest Hills Drive in particular), they weren't bad but they didn't feel particularly fresh or exciting. Though Run the Jewels 2 has made a big cross-genre impact, this year feels like a stronger year than 2013 even though there weren't as many gigantic commercial releases that got people fired up / polarized like Yeezus or Nothing Was the Same.

My home state has had a strong year though, between YG, ScHoolboy Q, Vince Staples, and the Billboard Urban dominance of DJ Mustard, people seem to be excited about west coast stuff again.

The alleged link to the Spotify playlist for these tracks isn't working for me. Anyone else have better luck?

Answered my own question: look up "Ramon Ramirez" as a profile on Spotify. Top hip-hop of 2014 is one of his playlists.

C'mon, Big KRIT released a great album that's getting no love here.

There's supposed to be an embedded player underneath the article. Ghostery was blocking it for me -- maybe that's your issue as well?

"In the wake of the tragedy in Ferguson, Mo., hip-hop was relatively quiet."
Says it all.

I feel like it wasn't a strong year for hip hop - just off the top of my head, all I can think of standing out was Madlib + Freddie Gibbs, YG, Run the Jewels, and the Underachievers. Couple others a friend turned me on to in the spring but I think they were 2013. Hopefully I can find some more stuff off this list, but I don't know how much. As they say, it was the year of the Mindless Banger, probably explaining why most didn't appeal to me.

All well, off to listen.

Seeing this thread reminded me to check out the Cocaine Blunts site to see if Noz's top 50 was up yet. And I'm pleased to say it is! CB Top 50 2014. It's always a great overview from someone deeply invovled, and the comments are fun (and will hopefully contain a download pack).

I feel 2014 has closed strong. Last few weeks I've been jamming Future - Monster, Chief Keef - Back from the Dead 2 and Lil' Boosie - Life After Deathrow. All are really strong tapes for a variety of different reasons.

And how could I forget, talking of closing strong - STARLITO, dropping a mixtape and an album in the same few days. One of the most thoughtful and literate rappers out there.

Yep yep, Cocaine Blunts and Complex are (to me) the definitive hip hop lists.

Complex: Best 50 Songs of 2014 (and here's a Spotify playlist of same)

It was a great year for rap. Shit keeps getting weirder.

Here's a self link, but what can I say, I'm an authority. Best Rap Videos 2014

I think my favorite slept-on thing was Ear Drummers (can we say that and not Rae srmueerss or whatever?) "No Flex Zone" and "No Type" both just BOOMED in this complicated/spacious way, respectively, and the weird teenage cracking voices actually work pretty well

wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist / want my wrist so cold ammonia in my fist (???)
