Patrick Leigh Fermor, in his travel book "A Time of Gifts," used his visit to the abbey as the climax of the book (even though it fell at roughly the midpoint). He described it as a “quinquereme among abbeys." Here's the first 53 pages (pdf). Concerning Fermor: Previously. Previously.

Adso is from Melk in The Name of the Rose...I suppose I could have thought that it was probably a real abbey, given the rest of the book, but it never occurred to me. Thanks for posting!

What a gorgeous abbey. Thanks for posting this; I've enjoyed looking through the photos even without knowing its history (or the Eco connection).
