Making the world a better place...one damn AOL CD at a time These guys have the right idea -- they want to send one million AOL CDs right back to Steve Case to tell him to stop polluting the world with this crap. They've only gotten about 12,000 CDs as of this morning, so help 'em out!

I swear I did a search of the entire last year, and even when I composed the post, I got the "this has never been posted" seal of approval, so like Ken Lay and the Enron Boys, I plead the 5th on double-posting.

Shouldn't there be some sort of statute of limitations to escape the double-post cops? Over four months, for goodness' sake! (Yeah yeah, take it to metatalk...)

On topic -- if AOL would just have the sense to send out their promo on rewriteable media again like they did in the floppy days, I'd start opening their mail again.

Have you seen these aluminum boxes they're shipping these damnable discs in now? They're a bit like Altoids boxes. I mean, do they think even more excessive packaging will make us join? I think not!

I don't know.... it is aluminum... earthlink didn't send me any aluminum...

briank,

If you look at the other thread, it linked to http://WWW.nomoreaolcds.com, while you linked to http://nomoreaolcds.com, without the WWW. It's lame that the double post check routine is so literal that it didn't catch it.

jfuller,

I don't want to come across as a double post bastard...I hate then too, but this is a straight up, by the book defintion of a double post. Not to mention that the front page is overcowded these days. I didn't know how to phrase my callout without sounding snarky, so I went for the basics. I apologize if I cam across that way.

I didn't think you were being snarky, TWN. I just feel stupid because I thought I had done my due diligence.

I do agree with jfuller, though, that there ought to be a statute of limitations on double-posts (a year seems adequate to me).

OH NO, not a double post. How long do we have before this Blog self-destructs?

It's not that it's a double post, per se, that's offensive. It's that it's just such damn old news. I mean, I read about this on an airplane (in USA TODAY for chrissakes!) about 5 months ago. Since then, it's probably been mentioned on the likes of Today Show and CBS' Survivor. What's next, a parody in MAD magazine? Let's move on people, it's just not funny anymore.

blah blah blah AOL sucks blah blah blah

Meanwhile, their marketing department is doing something right... this little "dinky" online service bought Time-Warner for crying out loud. Time-Warner!

briank: try the google cache too ... it's pretty damn good, especially for older stuff. Also, when searching for the URL, it's worth omitting the www and just searching for "nomoreaolcds.com" and suchlike.

Personally I don't believe there's anything intrinsically snarky in pointing out a double post. I always understood that it's just to bring it to Matt's attention in case he decides he wants to delete it. If relevant discussion ensues, he might decide not to. The best place for arguing about it is probably MetaTalk, in any case.

That would be "google search". Doh!

I wrapped an AOL disk and gave it to my mom for Christmas and she laughed her ass off.

Good idea. I'll do that. Moreover, she's a computer illiterate and we have networked ADSL at home, so I'm not sure she'll even understand the joke, sadly.

On second thought, I won't do that. Damn !
