Nevada's Governor Kenny Guinn and Idaho's own Senator Larry Craig duke it out over nuclear waste disposal at Yucca Mountain. Of course the plan has no shortage of detractors like "Yucca Mountain Facts", and the Las Vegas Sun has done a pile of reporting on it: their "dossier", and "science vs. politics" (first in a five-part series, all of which is now online). The state should have a copy of the Evironmental Impact Statement somewhere, too. It's fun for the whole family!

Guinn and Craig's stories are part of the High Country News' syndicated Writers on the Range series.

I heard somebody say this nuclear waste should be scattered all over enviromentally sensitive areas. Although the occasional lizard or monkey might get irradiated, human encroachment, be it 4-wheelers, loggers, or even eco-tourists-could then be curtailed. Who's gonna cut down a tree or go hiking at the expense of 20,000 chest X-rays every 2 seconds? Seems like a good idea to me.

Thanks for the links, dcehr. I think this is the first time I have seen the HCN website. It seems like a pretty good resource, and something I should be reading, as a westerner. As for Yucca Mountain, how long has this process taken, a couple decades? Sometimes I wonder how many nuclear power plants we would have in this country if every state that used nuclear power had to keep the waste in its own land. I can see why Nevada's governor said, "This decision stinks and Nevada will redouble its fight." I thought that the decision to cut off the water to Yucca Mountain to be an interesting move.
