Rumble in the Capitol!

In 1995, while debating President Clinton's decision to send troops to Bosnia, U.S. Representatives Jim Moran (D-VA) and Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA) got into a heated debate on the Capitol floor. As described in a clip from an interview on the Bills and Brews YouTube series, Moran talks about the "bench-clearing brawl" (later described by the Washington Post as a "shoving match") that occurred afterwards. Guest appearances (in animated form) from Representatives "B-1 Bob" Dornan (R-CA), George Miller (D-CA), William Baker (R-CA), and Dave Obey (D-WI).

I suppose it is progress that no one suffered brain damage in this incident.

Wouldn't they have to have brains to...

Nevermind.

Low hanging fruit and all that.

"Moran found him crying in the cloakroom."

Pfft. Amateurs.

If you're a fan of the genteel art of the legislative donnybook, may I suggest parliamentfights.

Ah yes, good old Jim Moran. He represented me for a significant portion of my life and from my perspective has been basically the best representative I could ask for. Pushing issues that mattered to me, creating arenas where underrepresented people in politics could share their perspectives, paying attention to his constituents and actively taking part in community activities.

But let us not forget how much of his early career was comedy freakin' gold. Perhaps I'm immature for finding all of his fights funny. Perhaps they are actually very funny.

Man I've never read the full story before and that caning thing is the perfect example of the strategic thinking of conservatives. Violent, aggressive reaction awarded with a dwindling number of loud cheers, followed by shrinking support from moderates and chickenshit back-pedalling when confronted by someone who can fight back.

Parliamentary pugilism? Douma dustup? Bicameral beatdown?

I'm here all week.

Ah, brings back the good old days of Congress.

And a time in history when they had to come up to Canada to indulge in unfettered gunplay:

Burlingame, a well-known marksman, eagerly accepted, choosing rifles as the weapons and the Navy Yards on the Canadian side of the US-Canada border in Niagara Falls, NY as the location (in order to circumvent the US ban on dueling).

Fiduciary fisticuffs?

I experienced a situation in elementary school where a guy wanted to fight me. I declined. He jumped on my back, so I leaned over and started to spin in a circle until he told me he was getting sick and then he shook my hand and we became friends.

Good to see that Congress is a place this type of behavior continues.

How...how was this not an FPP in its own right? Or was it one that I missed?
