U.S. Supreme Court Will Rule On Gay Marriage This Term

From NPR: The justices said today they will review an appellate court's decision to uphold the ban on same-sex marriage in Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and Kentucky. The four states are among 14 that ban same-sex marriage.

The case will be argued in April; a decision is expected by late June.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, if we're gonna have a post about this now and not just wait till April, let's have something with more meat about the actual cases and not just a "and this is a thing that happened/will happened" sort of announcement. -- cortex

I periodically check my email at work (covertly). When I saw the news alert about this my gasp turned a lot of heads and nearly got me in trouble.

STILL WORTH IT

From the Order list:

The cases are consolidated and the petitions for writs of
certiorari are granted limited to the following questions: 1)
Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a
marriage between two people of the same sex? 2) Does the
Fourteenth Amendment require a state to recognize a marriage
between two people of the same sex when their marriage was
lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state? A total of ninety
minutes is allotted for oral argument on Question 1. A total of
one hour is allotted for oral argument on Question 2. The
parties are limited to filing briefs on the merits and presenting
oral argument on the questions presented in their respective
petitions. The briefs of petitioners are to be filed on or
before 2 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2015. The briefs of
respondents are to be filed on or before 2 p.m., Friday,
March 27, 2015. The reply briefs are to be filed on or before
2 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2015.

And four more dominoes will fall....

In a time when it seems like we've made no progress in eradicating racism in the last 45 years and world leaders refuse to take global warming seriously while its effects become ever more pronounced and threatening, it is nice to keep getting consistently good news and steady progress on one front.

I want to cheer about this, but right now I feel like it's just a bunch of dice in a Yahtzee cup.

I have my fingers crossed. Would be nice to have this finally settled nationwide in favor of equality.

This is more than four dominoes, it is "is there a right to gay marriage in all 50 states, yes or no?" All in, baby.
