A Date with Mark E. Smith

In the comic 'I'll Be Your Mirror' by Una Baines and Keith McDougall, Ms. Baines (founding member of the bands The Fall, Blue Orchids, and The Fates) tells the autobiographical tale of a first date with Mark E. Smith.

In other recent Fall news, Brix Start-Smith just announced the 2016 publication of her memoir, The Rise, The Fall, and The Rise. Brix has a new Fall cover band with Paul and Steve Hanley called Brix & The Extricated that MES was thoughtful to mention ("They're fucking sub-human") in MOJO when making predictions for 2015. Live from their first gig six weeks back in Manchester: '2x4', 'Cruiser's Creek', 'L.A.', 'Lay of the Land','Big New Prinz'.

I approve of the (seemingly) recent upswing in Mark E. Smith related material on the internet.

Steve Hanley released a memoir last year (‘The Big Midweek’) about his lengthy stint in The Fall, which was well-received.

As dating strategies go, I think "Find somewhere you absolutely hate - then hang out there on the lookout for girls who might also hate it", is worthy of special attention here.

I've always appreciated the comic Lottie Learns How... to be in The Fall from Viz. Oh, and I recently bought a jacket from Brix, so please form an orderly queue if you'd like to be allowed to touch the hem.

I was just wondering yesterday what it would be like to date Mark E. Smith and that was exactly what I would have expected. Lovely.

Also, a friend in college babysat Brix, for whatever that's worth.

Ooo, I can't wait. By the by, to me, "Una Baines" has always sounded like someone who should be a character in a Michael Moorcock novel.

Or a rival of Ena Sharples in Coronation Street.

The image of teenage MES tripping with his girlfriend and signing along to Sister Ray is the most moving thing I've seen this morning.

I dated an "Una Barnes" back in the day.

Still, it's interesting to see a depiction of MES from before he'd cultivated his public persona.

You might enjoy these two letters from 1976 and 1977.
