"A good rewind is that rare thing in life: a product of the moment. If the timing is right, a rewind will bring excitement to the dancefloor, a celebration of the music being played, an energy charge for the place and the people." Laurent Fintoni goes deep on the history of pulling the record back across a variety of genres, from reggae and dub, to dubstep and hip-hop.

Rewind selector! So many memories of my days as an afterhours bartender and the wild-ass reggae parties we'd host.

I so wish the idea of rewinds had percolated from reggae much deeper into electronic dance music culture. Some techno DJs do it, and at least in my day it wasn't unheard of in the dnb/jungle/happy hardcore (way more overlap there than you'd think) parties, but where flow is prioritized--house, techno, trance--it was an incredibly rare phenomenon.

Sometimes you need to stop the party and do it again because it's so good.

Drum and bass DJs did rewinds all the time in the dc area.

DnB still does it, at least where old heads are involved - that's Andy C in the first GIF. I was going to talk about dubstep and stuff but it's all in the link. You're crazy if you actually want to hear rewinds in house/techno. Don't stop the beat, asshole, just don't do it!

It's fine in the genres where it's a thing but it's only democratic when the audience actually calls for it and well sometimes...

The weird English comedy show, Bo Selecta, took its name from a line in a Craig David song about rewinds. They started out parodying that song and just kept going from there.
