The official misheard national anthem, as I know it:

Australians all are ostriches
four minus one is three
with olden royals we're fair and loyal
our home is dirt by sea
I learned to bounce on nature strips
in booties stitched with care
in mystery's haze let elk be caged
and plant azaleas there
Enjoy all trains then let us in
and dance Australia yeah!

For the non-Australians here, I urge you not to look up the actual words.

Cathy Wilcox is a national treasure. Her Twitter feed is a good way of keeping in touch with news from home for expats, too. More fun than reading the depressing news of Abbott's escapades in straight reportage.

It's a shame that Australia's political cartoonists are mostly best-known and appreciated only in their home cities and states.

I'm glad you posted this - I really came by mefi today to see if anyone had. She's one of my favourite cartoonists and is included in my daily sweep of news websites.

The subtext of the message is nothing more than “...because I'm Prime Minister and what I say goes”. It's like Caligula appointing his horse to the Senate, just to take a territorial piss and rub his underlings' noses in it.

Captain's choice! Team Straya!

This is the most bullshit government ever in this country, and I look forward to them sinking like a rock when they have the guts to face the voters — the date of which will be pushed back as far as possible, because Micawber. Something might turn up, yunno, royal baby, visit from Her Maj.

Ate jacket potatoes and listened to (the beginning of) the Triple J Hottest 100 last night. Happy Australia Day!

PS: did they end up playing Taylor Swift? They claimed they wouldn't at the beginning, but we weren't sure if they wear messing with us.

did they end up playing Taylor Swift?

She isn't on the list. Although other pop acts are, so all the preciousness about TS spoiling the Hottest 100 looks pretty silly, really. "Uptown Funk" is good enough for ya, but "Shake it Off" and "Blank Space" aren't? Pffft.

The official misheard national anthem, as I know it:

Yes, but "something something alcohol" is too good, steal that.

I, for one, could have done without one more ditto-head vote for the party of neigh.

Haven't we all got something better to do than waste our time with this, this graffiti? I for one am going to put some thoughts down on paper, walk down to the post office, mail it to a friend with instructions to add her thoughts then post it on.
