25 years after first seeing light as a 6-page story in RAW(Prev), Richard McGuire expanded his time and space-spanning Here to a 300-page novel. In Five Dials Magazine's 35th issue, Richard McGuire Makes a Book, "sketches, notes, phrases, inspirations, paintings, lists and photo collages used to create the essential Here," are presented for your enjoyment and edification. posted by Alvy Ampersand (4 comments total) 13 users marked this as a favorite

Here is really fantastic. Sometimes when reading it, I felt like it should have been an interactive piece rather than a static book, but after awhile I realized the compression/expansion of so much time in a limited physical space was an intense enough experience as is. Really a brilliant work.

And this Five Dials PDF is so good-- love peering into his process.

I can't believe I've never come across Here before, it's just the sort of thing I like. Thanks for posting this!

That original comic is amazing. The new book looks amazing too, in a similar yet very different way.

I'd never heard of this before, thank you so much for posting!

Yah, the magazine PDF is fantastic, great-looking and an interesting look at how this was done. And, the Chris Ware review is what made me buy the book, and boy I'm glad I did.

I actually bought that issue of RAW in a used bookstore maybe 10 years ago, and always remembered Here, it's one of just a few pieces of comic art that I can say that about. So I can't say I was waiting for this- who knew it was coming? - but I can say that it was worth the wait. Just an amazing thing,
