What a putt!

There goes John [SLVimeo]. He's walking up the sidewalk. Gonna go in to the building to get his putter, and ball. He's got 18 intense holes ahead of him. Who knows how he'll do. A mini-golf game is shot like a pro golf game with commentary.

Very weak, but still possibly preferable to Nick Faldo. Sorry, Sir Nick Faldo.

I liked this.

Are there people out there who don't play mini golf while doing serious golf commentary? Aside from the Caddy Shack quoters, of course. One or the other though, right?

Not whispery enough to be accurate. I don't even watch golf commentary and I know that those commentators basically don't talk at a normal volume except when something amazing happens.

I wonder how actual Pro Mini Golf Masters players feel about this. (Not too bad, I would imagine; I'd bet you've got to have a sense of humor.) In any case, professional mini golf is an actual thing. The cash purse is $12,000 this year.

Not enough fake bird sounds and too much classical piano.

A new course record!

I only finished 2 holes before I abandoned the round.

Good effort but I want to see this with two announcers discussing the merits of each shot in hushed tones.

Yeah, the tone of the announcer is all wrong.

Amount of classical piano in video: 0.

If we play mini golf* and you quote movies instead of being funny all on your own, I'm leaving.

*do anything

Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!

This was the concept for a show in Quebec in the 90s called Défi mini-putt. It's all on youtube in it's 90s glory

I am always excited to learn about things that were a big part of other peoples childhood and I have friends who loved this show as a child. You can still go play some of the official courses around Quebec. I have a dream one day recreating the show with friends. Money prizes will be included.

To test the validity of this I need to play this for my Dad on a weekend afternoon and see if he starts to fall asleep on the couch.

Todd: It's a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach today, 78 degrees with 5 mph winds out of the East.
*10 second pause*
Brett: Matt Haughey comes into this Open after having struggled a bit in the last few outings, hoping to get back a bit of momentum today
*10 second pause*
Todd: Par 5 here, he's got to clear the windmill , pass the bunker, roll across the little wooden bridge, and land on the forecastle of the little pirate ship.
*10 second pause*
Brett: Steps up to the tee with a red putter.
Todd: Interesting choice, there
*10 second pause*
Brett: ...and nice shot off the tee, through the windmill
past the bunker
little trouble entering the brid-

Todd: Oh no.
Brett: He's off the bridge ...and into the rough.
Todd: Tough lie for Haughey.
Brett: That's just rotten luck.

Todd: Back in a minute here at the BMW Prudential Metamucil Levitra MiniGolf Pro-Am here in beautiful Rehoboth Beach, Maryland.

The music ruins it.

That is a criticism that can often be applied to vimeo links. I can never get to the end of one without shutting off the sound.

If Vimeo has taught us anything, it is how bad music ruins good everything-else.

Since it didn't show up under related posts, I'm going to link to last year's post about a Grantland video on a perfect 18 in Putt-Putt.

If I win the lottery I'll build the world's first full size mini golf course. The fast-spinning windmills, their blades nearly touching the ground, will make it a bloody game.

Of course, no one will be able to play it, what with the 15 ft tall putters.

Rehoboth Beach is in Delaware. You're thinking of Ocean City, which to be fair is where the actual minigolf mostly is.

(I've played that pirate ship course every year of my life since I was five.)

Rehoboth has its mini golf course, though. It's pretty much just around the corner from the haunted mansion ride.

I'm always good for a Caddyshack quote but a great golf commentary that really speaks to me is Lee Carvello's Putting Challenge.

Shoot. I grew up going to Bethany Beach in the summer, somehow mixed up Ocean City & Rehoboth in memory. In any case, lots of Putt Putt.
posted by leotrotsky at 5:04 PM on February 16, 2015

Yeah, but Rehoboth's minigolf kind of blows. There's that one that used to be on the roof and once the novelty of the placement wore off, it was just meh.
