Looking for a tree with a story

Of course the Europeans pick the football tree. Anything else just wouldn't be European enough.

(I would have liked the Polish oak to win, but I have a soft spot for dogs.)

Is this Eurovision for arborists?

It opens in Hungarian for me. There's a choice of languages right at the top of the page.

I rather like the 2012 winner, personally.

I have to say the lonely tree of Llanfyllin doesn't look that lonely in the picture.

Hey, hey, hey. Screw you, Estonian tree. You beat out the Major Oak, and you know what that has? That has a hollow base! Robin Hood hung out there! There are metal poles all around to keep it standing up!

What do you have, a few tractor cable marks and some kids playing football around you? Bah. You're nothing. The Major Oak should have won.

Estonian tree: stands up proudly under its own power in spite of a globe-bestriding dictator's lackeys attempts at pulling it down.

Major Oak: would collapse under its own weight if it weren't for constant fiddly propping.

I'm OK with the victor. Kids can and do still play under it! I'd watch more soccer if there were more trees on the fields...

I really like the Major Oak...but at 800 years old, it would have been a little baby sapling when Robin Hood was fictionally running around circa 1200.

But the 2000 year old olive tree from Italy - that's a legendary tree. That's a tree the Romans would have eaten olives off.
