That made me look like a crazy person at the grocery store waiting for a friend to check out. Neat?

Wow, suddenly I feel like I'm playing a 90s CDROM game!

Red Bull F1 360° Experience (a few more here).

Most videos I've seen go up to 4K, so if they look a bit fuzzy, try a higher resolution. My laptop does a decent job at 1440p, but 4K doesn't quite work.

That was really slick on my Android handset! Thanks for sharing.

I was able to view these with no problems on my iPhone 5 using Google Cardboard (although I prefer the Hasbro my3D viewer) and a free app called Homido 360 VR Player.

In the player, go to Internet Browser, then YouTube. Search for the video (use the YouTube search, not the Internet Search), then set the SBS (side by side) to ON, and the format to 360. No resolution setting, so it's a little fuzzy, but quite watchable.

The player also has 10 spherical vids built in, and some 3D demo videos, so it's fun for a good 15 minutes or so. As I finish typing this post, I see that there is also a Homido smartphone VR headset that they would like you buy, so that.

I honestly don't get it.

Granted, I am watching on a PC, so I guess I miss the thrill of using an accelerometer to move my field of vision around, but the first minute seems like nothing more than a rehash of QuickTime VR, albeit with animation on a TV screen. Then, we are on rails, and can look around at CG stuff as the camera moves forward.

People on YouTube are freaking out about how cool this is. I guess it would be cool if it was a more lifelike scene, where you could direct your attention to different actors in a scene, and be immersed in it. But this...it just feels like QuickTime VR combined with a videogame cut scene.

Am I missing a lot by not viewing it on a mobile device?

It's nice of Google to give us a teaser of the the future of YouTube...Works best in Chrome or Android. You have been warned.

You are missing the whole point by not viewing it on a mobile device. But are you missing much? After watching a couple of them I had my fill.

I also don't see the point of doubling the image so you can watch it on Google Cardboard. What you need is a 360° stereo image. I wonder what kind of camera you would need for that.

I tested this out with a video I made from a simulation of an earthquake, part of a project called "SeismoDome" we showed at the Hayden planetarium last fall. It worked pretty well although it makes me wish I'd rendered it at much higher resolution.
