That first one is so relaxing. They should sell it as a dual action can crusher/zen meditation aid.

Is there footage of a GoPro being engulfed by lava?

The Coke in lava wasn't what I expected. It looks like the lava hitting the can's bottom first caused it to vent into the lava, allowing the rest of the can to just be engulfed with almost no venting except for that tiny amount. It didn't even push open the tab or where the top is sealed. Which is just weird. And surely the lava is hotter than the melting temperature of the aluminum? Looking it up, aluminum melts at 660C, and this looks like a pahoehoe, basaltic flow and should be more than 1000C. I guess the lava might crust around the cooler can and that might insulate it a bit, while the can itself and its venting could also cool the aluminum, and all of this is sufficient to prevent the aluminum from just instantly melting. This is totally uninformed speculation.

I'd think that most of the places where you have these pahoehoe flows would have some environmental regulations or laws against doing something like this. Though maybe it doesn't really matter much.

As for the can crusher -- that looks like fun. It is relaxing to watch, but it makes me want to actually stand there and feed cans into it myself.

I have no idea how these people got their cans wedged into their lava, or why.

Ivan, you can boil water in a paper cup.....with a blow torch.

Man that can crushing machine looks like an injury waiting to happen.

So is lava for that matter.

I'm a bit worried that Lava is indifferent to the very best that America can offer.

Coke cans + Machine

As a kid I would go and stay at this cabin in Montana some summers, and it's enough out of the way that people just used trash compactors and hauled trash to a dumpster site rather than getting any kind of trash pickup, which was weird to me as a city kid; and the weirdest bit of that was the lack of any kind of recycling program, even for cans and bottles, which I'd grown up collecting and taking to the store for deposit redemption cash.

And so cans were just trash, which means they were a lot of unwanted empty space, which meant crushing 'em. And there wasn't a nice automated deathtrap like this available; instead, one of the cabin chores was to take all the accumulated cans and use a sort of nutcracker-writ-large manual lever mechanism to crush 'em down to pucks.

It's one of those physical things that seems like awesome fun before you actually have to do it at length—crushing shit, woo, rad—but it mostly just ends up giving you a sore arm and a lot of splatter, especially if the cans aren't quiet empty. And there were coke cans in the mix, but this was mostly adults vacationing and so for every coke can four or five were beers, and by the end of my first crushing session the shoulder ache was fighting with the stale beer patina for attention in the Why Did I Think This Would Be Rad roundtable in my head.

Basically, that looks like a handy machine.

Yeah, I know. That's a good point, but I think the thermodynamics are different in this example.

1) I am legitimately a little overwhelmed by the design ingenuity on the can crusher. First thought would be to build this machine vertically, but then disposing of the crushed can becomes a minor problem. You likely wouldn't build it horizontally until you'd figured out the little crushed-can gravity-slot, which becomes An Option once you visualize the transformation of the can. It's perfect why-didn't-I-think-of-that cleverness.

2) The Coke cans seem to fizzle out, but the Monster can explodes. Is that a coincidence of placement, luck, and timing? Or does it happen consistently, maybe based on the chemistry of the liquid and/or the construction/composition of the aluminum can?

also the sidebar on that page is full of lol

I think the lava flow blocks the pop-top for the monster can, so it doesn't have a weak spot to partially vent from. So it builds up and explodes properly.

Man, now I really want somebody to do "One Ring replica in lava." Just because, you know. Might be really hard to get it to the volcano, though.

It indeed came across as weirdly sexual to me, in the vein of a Ron Mueck or some such. The phallic cans vs. the moving, rounded forms of the lava. I'm sure there's a Rule 34 somewhere down this route.

In a more perfect world, the lava would have recoiled in horror when the Monster liquid touched it.

Man that can crushing machine looks like an injury waiting to happen.

The Makerspace I belong to has a pneumatic can crusher and because the thing is so absurdly dangerous, it was built in such a way as to have two buttons that must be pressed simultaneously on either side of the machine so you'd really have to work to get a hand crushed in it.

But holy hell is it addictive to use. No one man should have that much power.

Fortunately science now has the answer one needs after spending a little grownup alone time with that special lava.
