I'm trying very hard to figure out what Potoman Ave is telling us.

As an Indian-American, I say that was almost funny.

Then I'll take you off my Seinfeld party invite list. We were going to have Bosco and cereal and soup and froyo.

Now Ireland needs to do one about Garth Brooks, with giant hats and terrible shirts.

Sorry I was referring to the popular twitter account's silly misspellings not making fun of the Indian video, which is very great!

A real Seinfeld party, of course, should have no soup. And muffin tops!

There are those who would call that "damned by faint praise".

So Imissed the memo, but I guess it's fashionable to proclaim one's dislike for Seinfeld now?

Anything wildly popular is a good target for disdain, even more so if it's getting long in the tooth. I actually find the episodes kind of not-that-funny these days but I used to like it at the time. So it goes.

So I didn't quite get the last bit about the nephew (the sound was a bit lacking in the last scene), so I checked the YouTube subtitles but they were autogenerated, and then I checked the comments but they were full of redditors yelling slurs and ranting about white knights. Can someone maybe summarize the punchline? Or was the joke that there was no punchline?

That would be awesome, because I always have to apologize when I tell people that I was never into Seinfeld. People often look at me like I just said that I like to kick puppies.

*checks mirror* yep, that's the look.

This was great, and I'd like it if they'd take my money and give me more of that empty Seinfeld humour with the soothing accents of the subcontinent.

Not quite swarmy enough to actually capture Seinfeld's humor but in general pretty good. Would've been great if they were sitting in a diner though.

Tatkal!

It is... A thing. A thing an anxious person can stress out about. Basically, a way to buy a train ticket on short notice, within a particular time window.

Was the lawyer supposed to be Kramer?

If he wasn't, then they really wasted an opportunity. And if he was, it was pretty weak.

But, on the whole, it was pretty funny.

Great. I'll just give you my nephew's contact. Give me a second.

So, is he any good, your nephew?

Oh yeah, he's brilliant. He's had formal training, you know. Diploma and all.

Diploma??

I own the box set. Guess I'm a square.

(Though Jerry's hair really bothers me. It's mullet-y.)

But, you know, a whole generation of H1-B Indian dudes with Seinfeld-ish mullet hair getting off of the BART in Fremont and Daly City, the dudes who adopted the sneakers and acid washed jeans look up until when I last rode the BART regularly (2001)--remains a nightmare for me, a time when I kept my eyes in a book. In my purse, on my shoes, anywhere but meeting those dudes' stares.

(Btw, these are the guys whose biodates were forwarded to my inbox every 20 mins by my mother when I hit 21, so I have a right to complain. Seriously, she'd have sold me off to anybody. Thank god I'm too old now, yet the PTSD from her idea of Indian guys suitable for me remains. I can't deal with cellphone holsters or overly white sneakers.)

Is any sitcom from the 1990s actually still ha-ha funny all this time later? I mean, I'm not all "Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom ever created!" and I was never "into" it either, but it does have moments of genius, mullets and all, if you look past the datedness. Besides, virtually every show with any element of comedy since then is basically gleefully ripping off Seinfeld in one form or another, like it or not.
posted by blucevalo at 11:22 PM on March 22, 2015 [1 favorite]

This was quite brilliant and I would love to see more episodes of these two dudes kvetching about the problems of modern urban India. I'm not Indian but have spent enough time there to appreciate that these guys really translated Seinfeld well to 21st century India.

"I confirmed and reconfirmed!"

The FPP says "Jerry Seinfeld cancelled a show" yet TFA seems to have some ambiguity about whether officials in Mumbai or organizers cancelled the show. Either way, it seems that Seinfeld, himself, did not cancel the show.

Roseanne.

And Seinfeld, I still think, though I guess I'm in the minority here. The jokes don't surprise anymore, since it's hard not to know them by heart, but Julia Louis Dreyfus and Jason Alexander are just plain funny. (The way JLD says "bisque" in The Yadda Yadda is a master class in timing, IMO)

I LOVE sienfeld. With or without the laugh track. (I think with the DVD's you get to choose to not have the laugh track, right?)
posted by rancher at 7:57 AM on March 23, 2015

Seinfeld didn't always have a laugh track, and even when they did location shooting, they would then play that tape before an audience to capture laughter. Any studio sitcom has sweetened laughter, I think.. But all of the scenes on the main set were before an audience.
posted by ReeMonster at 8:31 AM on March 23, 2015

That was nicely done (and an entirely loving tribute to Seinfeld). The lawyer character was based on Jackie Chiles, Seinfeld's parody of Johnnie Cochran.
