An Idaho State Senator, Paul Shepherd, has called on the state to impeach federal judges who struck down the state's anti-SSM law. One mistake, though. He forgot to renew the domain for his re-election campaign, and now a gay nerd has taken it over.

Currently, it's a Wiki site with little information, so the Raw Story article is more informative than the place-holder site.

I thought nobody had even declared their candidacy yet except Ted Cruz, and he'd failed to secure anything even in dot-horse territory.

I would also be so bold as saying that few people who voted for Paul Shepherd did so because they saw his campaign website.

Sing or Swim, you are generally correct. Vermin Supreme and the candidates from the Prohibition Party and Transhumanist Party don't generally get counted.

And TedCruz.com previously.

Hillary Clinton has control of her namesake URL hillaryclinton.com and it seems the best her opponent was able to do is to snag hillary2016.com.

Don't worry, Paul Shepard, I bet Idaho governor Butch Otter is on the case.

Huh. I'd have thought 'Vermin Supreme' was a characterization of the group of candidates, or perhaps the office they're seeking, but I see where it's a proper name. Live and learn...

It would surprise me if a state had the authority to impeach a federal judge (though it doesn't surprise me at all that a Neanderthal homophobic state legislator might think it does -- or might pretend to think he does even if he knows better).

When you think of all the potential permutations a candidate's website could take (JohnSmith.com; JohnSmith2016.com; Smith.com; Smith2016.com; John2016.com; SmithforPresident.com; SmithforPresident2016.com; JohnforPresident.com; JohnforPresident2016.com; 2016Smith.com etc. etc. etc.) I think these "so and so didn't nail down their obvious campaign URL!" stories are a bit forced. This one's a bit more plausible in that it was a URL he'd used before but the very fact that it has that somewhat less-than-archetypal format (the -usa suffix) tells you that it's still a bit of a non-story. Nobody will ever guess at "candidate name plus usa" for the URL of a candidate. The only thing that would lead them to the site is some specific campaign literature or a Google search and it's easy for the campaign to make sure that the Google searches lead to the official site.

Very related: Apparently, and quite shockingly, Vermin Supreme has NEVER been acknowledged by the "Name of the Year" website (FPP'd here yesterday)

Yeah, I can't tell if it's just the usual "here's something to make the opposition look bad" type of thing, or the people writing these stories are so old they still just type words into the URL box and put a .com at the end.

I'd wouldn't be surprised if the ratio of people who find a campaign site by search, compared to people who type in "candidate's name . com" is 1000 to 1.

I was confused too, but it turns out that the FPP somewhat misstates the case that Shephard "has called on the state to impeach federal judges." Actually, his resolution calls on Congress to impeach the judges.
