I had great fun whizzing around Soho chomping strange little pills! And now to go and look at this Google Maps game.

Playing on the orderly Manhattan grid is strikingly uneventful

Odd, I don't live in NYC anymore but I also headed right for Canal Street.

In this post-9/11 world, making real-world maps for your favorite violent video game is no laughing matter!

I let it pick at random for me. It put me in Tokyo. That was pretty difficult.

I don't usually waste time at work, but I certainly did today.

Man, the Arc de Triomphe level is not easy.

Dupont Circle is not quite as fun as I'd hoped.

Just for fun I thought I'd try my old home town, Duluth, MN, where the street grid is 45° off the compass directions. It quickly became not fun. Arrow keys weren't doing what I expected and I kept reversing at intersections right into the pursuing ghosts.

Today I learned my neighbourhood is the extra hard level of Pac Man. (That was fun, thanks!)

Places in Japan — especially residential areas of old cities — tend to be incredibly difficult. The controls do an admirable enough job, but sometimes Pac-Man is just going to wind up having to deal with one-way roads and non-euclidean tunnels.

"Randomly" I ended up at the Taj Mahal, and it was hard without the exiting on the right side and entering on the left...thingy!

I by mistake started on Expert mode, aka New England

I live in a city that was built on old Mennonite farmsteads, where most of the roads used to be cow paths or market trails. "North" can mean anything from north-north-east to west-south-west. 5-way intersections are as common as the trains that randomly run through the middle of town.

Pac-Man did not fare well here.

My neighborhood is also extra-hard Pac-Man. Heh.

Cool. I've been looking for restaurants in my area that serve cherries and ghost meat.

Has anyone figured out how they pulled this off, particularly the mobile version? It must have been included in app updates months ago. Is it triggered by the actual date, or a flag on Google's servers?

The Web version seems relatively straightforward by comparison.

For some reason it isn't working for me in Chrome :( I updated and everything! The button's just not there!

I assume that someone out there on the interweb has already identified the set of city streets that most closely resembles an actual Pac-Man game screen?

At "random", Google sent me to play in Cairo and it was a pretty cool board.

Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA, is full of little pathways and much more fun than it has any right to be, especially since Pacman's so hard to control.

I'm not a fan of Phoenix, for many reasons, but I'll say this for it - it makes a good pac-man grid.

We use the Google reCAPTCHA widget on some of our company sites and today when you check "I am not a robot" it shows a dancing robot and says "I can dance like robot." Nice.
