Sometimes when musicians return to work after a long hiatus, the results can be disappointing. I adore Portishead for example, but there was something disappointing in their newest work. The album was beautiful of course, and Beth is still marvelously talented. But the magic was somehow diminished.

I can confirm this is not the case with the new Prodigy album. I have been BLASTING it on repeat since I downloaded it. This is The Prodigy at the top of their game.

I recall that Firestarter was written on a 12-bit sampler. They remind me of The Chemical Brothers, they are musical tech nerds.

This video demonstrates a recreation of the production of Smack My Bitch Up using Ableton. Considering that The Prodigy did the same thing without the aid of Ableton, but the now antiquated equipment they used at the time is quite astonishing.

I'm also delighted that Faith No More have a new single, which is also FNM at their best again. It's like my childhood heroes are all back to kick ass and show the kids how it's done. Patton never really went away, his side projects have been as diverse as Italian pop music, to mathcore metal. If you are a Patton fan I beg you to look them up.

I'm not a snob about music, and I acknowledge that The Prodigy is good at what they do (except maybe lyrics). Yet I feel vaguely embarrassed to listen to them, where I don't have that issue with, say, Chemical Brothers. The new album brings back that feeling.

(except maybe lyrics)

Frequent Collaborator Kool Keith has some choice words for you. Specifically:

DOODOO

SPACESHOES

and HALFSHARKALLIGATORHALFMAN

Choose one, and choose wisely, lest your brain be taken to another dimension when you pay least attention. Were such a thing to transpire, the cost would be dire: one mind blown drastically, fantastically.

" Yet I feel vaguely embarrassed to listen to them"

Embarrassed? Why?

Because The Prodigy were kind of a piss-take way back when.

I wonder if the MC finally killed the dancer?

I was not aware of this! Thank you, Metafilter.
In college long ago I once constructed a Prodigy song out of Lego bricks.
Hallucinogens played a key role in this achievement.

I wonder if the claymation fox at the end of the latest video is the same character as the red fox in the last video they made against fox hunting where one of the cartoon dudes looked like Benecio del Toro.

See I read that as more against the tory party in general.

We had younger kids at the same time as teens and SMBU was known as Smack My Picture in our house. Always loved Prodigy, bless em.

My number one wish in life is to be in a supermarket and see the egg fridge adorned with a cardboard standee of Maxim Reality with a speech bubble shouting "Egg Sale! EGG SALE! EGG SALE!"

As a former supermarket employee, this should not be that hard to make happen. Hint: the guy collecting the carts from the paring lot is probably high right now.

Frequent Collaborator Kool Keith

I know of one song where he rapped for them, but otherwise it's moatly The Prodigy sampling old Ultramagnetic MCs records, isn't it? Can't quite call it collaborating

If I recall, that was from DirtChamber Sessions. Great record.
