Well hell! If they can do that, I don't see any reason to put up with Lars Ulrich's bullshit any longer.

Love this post and it made me smile. I don't want to get into a whole thing with you about your title but seriously.

I absolutely believe that girls can do this and have always been capable of doing this. Lots of girls/women rock. And lots of them rock harder than boys/men.

I've seen some of their other videos, and I'm fascinated by the one who's rocking a bass nearly as long as she is tall.

Excellent. Checking out the lead's stance at around 3:50 I thought "This is the kind of Women Lean In I can get behind without reservation".

I was also thinking that the girl on the bass guitar looked like she might like to be doing something else when I remembered that most rock bassists look like they just happened to be up on stage so they figured they'd play a few notes or something while they're there.

I was just thinking "she's got that pro bassist glazed look down already!"

Lead guitarist busts some serious guitarface around 1:40 OTOH.

Yes, women can rock but... this performance, to me, lacked intensity.

There... that's better.

Sorry, it was supposed to be tongue in cheek. I thought I had made that apparent via the clickbait-y wording, "You won't believe..." I also did not intend for you to actually hide your sons.

But forget it... I'm tired of Metafilter and its ridiculously over-the-top reactionaries... I'm out for good this time. Goodbye.

I'm so thrilled for these kids. Listening to the drummer lay into her floor tom and seeing the guitarist's posture change as she delivers that first crushing power chord conveyed all the joy and exhilaration of amplified rock music. Awesome that these girls get to share it and contribute to it, and that I get to share it with them. I feel like a youngster again. *devil salute*

I get why people hate on Lars as a person, but is he really a bad drummer too? My passing impression is that Metallica did rock at some point in their career, and I think it would be hard to do that without a somewhat competent drummer. Any evidence to the contrary is welcome, of course.

Either way, these kids are kicking ass here!

I'm not competent enough to evaluate his drumming technique, but I do know the "already better than Lars" thing is a YouTube meme. You can find it in the comments to pretty much every video of kids rocking out.

The drummer is the standout. She has both great chops and an engaging stage presence. The lead singer / guitarist is OK but not amazing. Hard to tell with the bassist since she is so young.

Didn't really feel like I was being 'over-the-top reactionary'. It was mostly just about championing how awesome women can be. I hope you do stick around.

Interesting. I don't know enough about making music to evaluate their skills, but my attention was drawn to the drummer too. I attributed it to the (supposed) incongruity of a young girl and some of the "hard dude" themes I'm used to seeing in some metal, but maybe it's just her stage presence, like you say.

Metalhead and occasional drummer here, and yes, Lars is/was a pretty awful drummer. He can keep time, but he's just so uninspired most of the time. I don't have video evidence to cite; I'll just point to the entirety of ...And Justice For All as exhibit A. Master of Puppets was decent from an early thrash point of view.

These kids are pretty good! Much better than tepid mid-period Metallica is their Muse cover, IMO.

BUT: Don't go to Berklee kids! It's a scam! Just play shows and write good tunes!

The attack culture here really sucks.

I kind of judge rock drummers by how strong they are playing simple beats, beats that "anyone" can play. Like I saw Keith Carlock play a couple of months ago, and when he was playing a simple funk beat, it had a power and groove that was just beyond what most people can do (of course he played a lot of really intense cryptic difficult stuff too). I think the drummer here is off to a great start, by that standard.

This seems like a good place to plug Girls Rock Camp Alliance. If there is a camp near you and you have a daughter, you can send her there, even if she's never picked up an instrument. They'll teach her the basics, but also confidence and how to generally rock.

If you don't have a girl to send, they can always use donations.

(many of them do Ladies' Rock Camps as fundraisers, which I can personally attest, are drunken weekends of middle-aged women who have never played learning 2-3 chords and/or riffs, writing songs [usually with filthy lyrics], and then performing them for an audience. It's insane.)

I"m a metal drummer and can confirm that Lars has somehow gotten worse since the classic Metallica albums. He was never flashy good but he held it down and played hard. See Some Kind of Monster for a good example of how his playing has lagged behind the rest of the band. I think its because he probably hasn't practiced since the black album came out...
posted by kittensofthenight at 2:34 PM on April 10, 2015

A couple of posi things that stood out watching this and their other covers:
1.) They're playing songs typically made up of quartets or more, and they manage a full sound as a power trio
2.) A lot of the bands they cover have a dedicated lead singer, but they're able to both play and sing leads simultaneously

(I really hope the drummer doesn't go through a banging on garbage cans St. Anger phase)

Their later videos show a marked improvement in the guitarist's stage presence, plus an upgrade from a Line 6 pedalboard to a proper pile of pedals, including an H9 - these girls are well-funded! The rate of improvement is impressive. I look forward to seeing what they can do a year from now.

Which BTW, in this instance is not something that I think would be construed as anything like an 'attack' by the average Mefite. It should be possible to politely take issue with either the framing or content of a post without it being framed as an attack on other members.

And maybe I misconstrued that title. Maybe it was meant as a rhetorical phrase. But on the Internet it is frequently difficult to discern the literal from the figurative. My commentary was not meant to attack the poster or this weblog forum. If anything it was a commentary on the larger social and cultural issues surrounding how girls/women are viewed.

But to each their own.
